Children's Outreach Support Worker
We are looking for a children's outreach support worker for a 12 year old boy with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and a learning disability.
He is a lovely, active, and affectionate young boy with a smile and giggle that brightens up the room. It is hoped that an outreach support worker will help him access the community to do activities he enjoys or shows interest in. This will hopefully increase his opportunities to safely spend time with other adults and/or his peers to build his social and independence skills.
He loves being outside and enjoys going for walks, visiting the park, and exploring on the beach. He enjoys using public transport; using the metro and more recently he has been on the Shields Ferry which he was very excited about.
When inside, he likes to watch videos on the computer, listen to stories and have foot massages. He enjoys engaging in sensory play, especially playdough and water play. Water play can get him a little over stimulated, so this tends to be time restricted.
A preferred activity is that he enjoys going to the Metro Centre and going for food at Nando’s, McDonalds, or Greggs. He does have a slightly limited diet and can often refuse to eat certain foods; however, it is very rare for him to refuse a Greggs cheese and onion pasty.
He has PICA and always carries a PICA bag with him to reduce the risk of this. He responds well to the verbal prompt “not food” and will usually spit out inedible foods when verbally prompted.
He can display behaviours of concerns when anxious, frustrated or upset, and has specific positive behaviour support strategies to help him to regulate during these times.
He requires support with most aspects of his personal care.
