Birmingham, United Kingdom SEVERN TRENT Full time

**LET’S CUT STRAIGHT TO IT**

**Want to do the best work of your life? Playing your part in making a big difference to the environment and communities we serve. Our people make Severn Trent a truly exciting and inclusive place to work - a place where you can be yourself and let your skills shine.**

Our purpose is taking care of life’s essentials, but we’re also big on making a difference, not just because we should but because we care.

Which is why we are excited to announce a new opportunity to join our team as a **Flow Cytometry Specialist. **With the team based at Minworth STW (Sutton Coldfield), this is a cross company role with opportunities to work from other locations in the Severn Trent region.

We introduced flow cytometry (benchtop and online) analysis to visualise our drinking water quality several years ago, and already it’s been a game changer for accurate monitoring and giving visibility of the efficacy of disinfection. Now we want to maximise the information on bacterial communities that is held in flow cytometry fingerprints to fully exploit the data and allow us to proactively manage and optimise our water treatment processes.

We want to understand aspects such as what influences the community structure and use this information to inform us if our processes are optimised for the changeable microbial challenges and what can cause shifts in the microbial population. Our ultimate goal is to automate fingerprint interpretation using artificial intelligence, but first we need to understand what the fingerprints are reflecting.

Would you like to be part of something new and exciting, influencing the future of water treatment and water quality monitoring?

Do you have experience in the analysis and interpretation of bacteriological flow cytometry data, specifically fingerprints?

This is a fantastic opportunity to bring your flow cytometry data interpretation expertise to a fascinating industrial, real-world problem

**LET’S TELL YOU MORE**

The key accountabilities of this role will include:

- Undertaking company upskilling in Flow Cytometry (FC) data analysis and interpretation, taking ownership of the creation of the resources required to train and embed this knowledge e.g. though creating standard operating procedures and ‘How to’ guides.
- Reviewing historic and current FC data alongside water treatment process and environmental data, with the aim to translate this into the context of water treatment efficacy, and the identification of the influencing variables. This will enable us to begin to use FC as a proactive/predictive tool for operating our Water Treatment Works.
- Development of gating strategies which will highlight unacceptable deviations from the norm and may suggest an increased risk to water quality standards.
- Contributing to the development of data interpretation software development.

**WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR**

Of course, it’s important that we attract the right skill sets, and those with the right experience but we value character, positivity, and a caring attitude in equal weight.

Apart from being a great fit for the team you’ll ideally have extensive experience in the analysis of bacteriological flow cytometry data, regardless of industry type but desirably environmental. Awareness of the functionality of several flow cytometry data manipulation software packages.

We welcome people from all walks of life and celebrate individuality as we know diverse minds, experiences and backgrounds help us to learn and better serve our communities. We employ thousands of people from across our community who really care about what they do. Because that is how we do what we do.

And when it comes to inclusion, we’re making sure we keep up the progress with our wonderful working groups - LGBTQ+, Women in Operations & STEM, Disability and Ethnicity, who help us do just that.

**HOW WE’LL REWARD AND CARE FOR YOU IN RETURN**

It’s not just a job you’ll get here, you’ll get a career too. We have a range of benefits that reward and recognise great work and award-winning training to ensure you reach your potential. And we’ll also help you play your part in looking after the environment and the community in which we live. Here’s some of our favourites:

- 28 days holiday + bank holidays (and the ability to buy/ sell up to 5 days per year)
- Leading pension scheme - we will double your contribution (up to 15% when you contribute 7.5%)
- 10% monthly discount with Busy Bee Nurserys, and one-week free childcare
- Sharesave - the chance to buy Severn Trent Plc shares at a discounted rate
- Dedicated training and development with our ‘Academy’
- Electric vehicle scheme and retail offers
- Family friendly policies
