The role

You will lead, plan, deliver and assess a range of modules on our undergraduate and postgraduate journalism programmes, combining practice and theory to prepare students for careers in the media and creative industries. You will draw on your own professional experience to deliver practical learning in digital journalism, news and feature writing, audio and video production and editing, and/or magazine and photojournalism. Your teaching will be informed by the latest developments in journalism practice. You will draw on your own knowledge and experience to deliver teaching informed by critical approaches to journalism, including an understanding of how class, gender, ethnicity, nationality, disability, sexuality and other social formations affect journalistic practices and representations.

Key Accountabilities

Delivery of practice and theory-driven learning activities on undergraduate and postgraduate journalism programmes, including lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, masterclasses, data skills advice, field trips, and the supervision of Bachelor and Master’s students. Contributing to, and leading on, the design, organisation and management of degree programmes and curriculum development for undergraduate and/or postgraduate programmes in multimedia journalism. Contributing to students’ understanding of multimedia content from critical perspectives including feminist, decolonial and critical race theoretical approaches. Contributing to digital and multimedia research methodologies training for undergraduate and postgraduate curricula in media and journalism. Teaching critical thinking skills for practitioners in multimedia/professional environments. Undertaking research and practice activities at a level commensurate with a leading international university, including high-quality research outputs and external funding bids. Readiness to take on leadership roles within the Media Culture Heritage section and the School of Arts and Cultures. Engaging in relevant University research groups and research networks. Development of research and practice network initiatives across the university through the premise of interdisciplinary collaborations in multimedia communication. Developing our networks and collaborative work with cultural, industrial and creative partners nationally and internationally. Working collaboratively and proactively across the School, Faculty and wider University to further our work with civic organisations and maximise the impact of research activities in the area of multimedia journalism and communication.

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Advanced knowledge and experience in the production and theory of multimedia journalism content and digital storytelling, with specialisms including, but not limited to, feminist approaches and critical race theory. Professional practice and teaching experience in digital audio and/or video communications across broadcast and online news platforms. Excellent achievements in research and a track record of attracting external funding. Demonstrable understanding of media audiences, including engagement with marginalised and under represented groups, in relation to media and journalism theory and practice. An excellent record of achievement in HE teaching, administration and a demonstrable ability to contribute to, and lead on, the design, organisation and management of degree programmes and curriculum development. Applicants must demonstrate (through formal or informal actions) a commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and widening participation in their spheres of work.
