**Job description**:

- **The role**:
**Person specification**:

- Providing and facilitating delivery of informed scientific and technical advice and challenge to the department.
- Conducting work to enhance the departmental science system, including mapping, development and establishment of advisory structures.
- Supporting the incoming CSA and their induction to the department.
- Providing reactive and proactive support to the NTA and CSA and their interests across the science landscape of the department, across Government and externally.
- Coordinating briefings and forging key departmental relationships.
- Supporting the delivery of key projects, including the Areas of Research Interest and production of the science plan.
- The postholder will be expected to work flexibly on emerging priorities and conduct adhoc tasks as required.

**Skills and Experience**

Essential criteria:

- An awareness or understanding of working in science and/or science policy in central government.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate scientific concepts and advice to a wide range of audiences, primarily non-technical.
- Excellent organisational skills, with an ability to prioritise issues and multitask according to business need.
- Ability to remain resilient in the face of changing priorities and problem solve when required.
- Ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships with a range of people at all levels across the department and government.

Desirable criteria:

- Educated to degree level or higher in science and/or engineering.
- An understanding or experience of working with Chief Scientific Advisers and their officials.
- An awareness and understanding of the scientific landscape - in order to be able to demonstrate credibility with a wide variety of stakeholders in government, academia and industry
- Experience of working within a Private Office
- Experience providing the secretariat to a high level board or similar experience
