We are seeking to appoint a Scientific Officer with an interest in Microbiology and a desire to teach. The post holder will assist the Principal Scientific Officer and Head of Teaching and Diagnostic Unit with the provision of practical classes within the School’s MSc and short course programmes. 

The post holder will assist the Principal Scientific Officer (Microbiology) with the day-to-day provision of practical Microbiology teaching within the Faculty. The post holder will act as a technical demonstrator in Microbiology practical classes including MSc Core Bacteriology, Core Virology, Clinical Bacteriology 1 and 2, Mycology and Antimicrobial Chemotherapy practicals and appropriate Control of Infectious Disease demonstrations. 

The post holder will be responsible for maintaining viral, bacterial and fungal culture collections for teaching purposes, general housekeeping of the teaching laboratory, stock control and ordering of laboratory consumables and assist in the preparation of teaching specimens, media, reagents and biochemical tests for practical classes. 

The successful applicant will have a degree, or equivalent, in Medical Microbiology or a directly related discipline and experience of microbiological techniques in a laboratory environment, for example as part of a postgraduate course or in a hospital laboratory. They will have knowledge of bacteriology and virology in addition to knowledge and awareness of health and safety in a laboratory environment. Experience of teaching/practical demonstrating at post-graduate level would be advantageous. The ideal candidate will also have excellent communication and organisational skills. Supervision will be available but the post holder will be required to work on their own initiative. Further particulars are included in the job description. 

This post is fixed term until 8 January 2027 and part-time 21 hours per week, 0.6 FTE. The working days for this post would be Monday, Friday and any other weekday (to be agreed between the candidate and PSO). The post is funded by the Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases and is available from 01 July 2024. 

Salary is on the Professional Services Grade 4 salary scale from £33,111 to £37,298 per annum pro rata (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London.
