**Job summary**:
This is an exciting time to join Chemical Regulations Division (CRD) with opportunities to develop and shape our regulatory schemes for the future. Our primary role is to deliver regulatory schemes intended to protect the health of people and the environment, balancing the economic and social benefits that chemicals offer to society and helping to ensure the safe and sustainable use of chemicals. We also have a role through guidance, partnership working and leadership to raise awareness and promote behaviour change to help improve the control of hazardous substances in the workplace.

**Job description**:

- As a Senior Regulatory Ecotoxicologist you will be part of a team that is delivering HSE objectives. The UK having left the EU offers an exciting opportunity to develop and shape our regulatory schemes for the future.
- With a world-class reputation for safeguarding the health and safety of people at work, HSE is adapting and evolving to meet the new challenges ahead. To help us meet these challenges, we require an ambitious Senior Regulatory Ecotoxicologist to join us.
- Ecotoxicologists evaluate data from standard regulatory studies on the toxicity of pesticides, biocides or other chemicals to a wide range of non-target organisms such as birds, mammals, aquatic organisms, bees, non-target arthropods, earthworms and soil macro and micro-organisms as well as non-target terrestrial plants. This information, in addition to data on exposure, is used in carrying out the associated regulatory environmental risk assessments. These assessments are performed for substance approval and product authorisation under the GB PPPR (Plant Protection Product Regulation) and GB BPR (Biocidal Product Regulation) and to support hazard classification under the GB CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) Regulation.
- You will mentor and support members of the team, provide peer review of work, lead on specific technical aspects including the development of new guidance, and provide advice to specialist and policy colleagues and wider stakeholders. There will also be opportunities for you to lead for HSE on national and global activities, to ensure we keep pace with new and emerging issues in the field of regulatory ecotoxicology.
- You will also have opportunities to provide training at external commercial events organised by CRD.**Person specification**:
You will have:

- Extensive experience of undertaking ecotoxicological hazard and environmental risk assessment of chemicals, including the evaluation of complex, contradictory and/or incomplete datasets
- Technical credibility and experience of performing representational roles at national and international meetings
- Experience of leading teams and/or projects, developing yourself and others, and delivering to time, cost and quality criteria
- Initiative and decisiveness, supporting your ability to make effective decisions, while being open to challenge and involving others
- Comprehensive analytical skills with the ability to write and present effective technical information in a clear, concise and timely way
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, enabling you to collaborate effectively and engagingly with others
- Experience in building and maintaining strong, positive working relationships both internally and externally
- Outstanding organisational skills in managing a varied workload to demanding deadlines

**Responsibilities**
- You will be one of our Senior Regulatory Ecotoxicologists, with a vital role in delivering our business plans
- Work flexibly to support the approval/authorisation of biocides and pesticides and GB CLP
- Staff management and development of a team including motivating staff, identifying training needs and taking a leading role in building capability
- Motivate and lead teams to identify requirements, plan work and manage delivery to quality, time and cost
- Provide guidance and deliver training to internal and external stakeholders on various aspects of the regulations
- Represent HSE, including presentation of your conclusions to a variety of internal and external stakeholders, e.g. expert groups and other Government Departments
- Lead key projects of work areas, monitoring and reporting on progress and delivery of projects to deadline and legislative tar
