This is an exciting opportunity to join our senior nursing and AHP team in Surgery & Cancer as Matron for Surgery. We are seeking to recruit an innovative, enthusiastic and highly motivated individual who is passionate about delivering high-quality compassionate care, as well as leading change and supporting staff.

You will be responsible for the line management of our surgical ward managers and other senior staff (Non Cancer CNS’). Working with colleagues you will lead patient flow ensuring effective management of our surgical emergency and elective activity.

The post holder will provide leadership and support to the ward managers/department nursing managers in their clinical areas of responsibility ensuring that nursing care is delivered to a high standard and that the nursing resource is managed effectively. He/she will also ensure that all aspects of service delivery is underpinned by patient and service user experience, ensuring that nursing care in all wards and departments is of the highest possible standard at all times with particular emphasis on dignity and compassion.

The Matron is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective day-to-day running of their clinical areas, delivering key quality, performance, financial plans and achieving key service improvements within these areas in liaison with the Surgery & Cancer, Integrated Clinical Service Unit(ICSU)-Associate Director of Nursing.

Clinical and Professional Leadership

To possess and demonstrate high level knowledge of nursing and quality enabling the successful understanding and supervision of patient care within the area

To identify and deal effectively with poor practice or declining standards of care

To report to the Associate Director of Nursingconcerns regarding quality or professional practice. NB: Quality includes safety, effectiveness and patient experience.

Ensure staff understand their role and contribution to patient safety in relation to infection prevention and control and have knowledge and competencies to ensure optimal care delivery by setting clear objectives, ensuring link nurses and champions are identified within the clinical areas to promote best practice and monitor compliance.

Create an environment and culture in which infection control is intrinsic to care delivery by setting and monitoring environmental standards and taking action to ensure compliance to cleaning audits and PEAT inspection specifications are met.

To encourage communication with patients, visitors and staff and through observations of practice and monitoring of standards ensure the maintenance of an optimal environment for patient care.

Ensure infection control standards are maintained in accordance with the Trust Policy. Support clinical staff to ensure that all appropriate infection prevention and control measures are understood, implemented, monitored and maintained, and appropriate action is taken in any instances where they are found to be compromised

To enable Ward Manager/Sister to monitor the standard of cleanliness of all the clinical areas within the area and liaise with the Facilities Team to ensure any short comings are addressed swiftly and effectively
