**Job description**:

We are looking for an experienced user researcher practitioner, with the ability to lead a skilled team of individuals, whilst managing a quality service. You will work collaboratively and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organisation about the benefits of adopting a user need led approach in policy and agile project delivery.

As the Head of User Research, you will:

- Maintain a quality service by continuing to build team capability through coaching and supporting your team members so that needs of delivery teams are met
- Assure the quality of user research undertaken by your team members including ensuring that the most appropriate user research methodology is being used during an agile project
- Seek out opportunities across DfTc to grow awareness and reputation of user research and in some cases deliver user research products as part of that
- Be confident in explaining user needs to senior civil servants and acting as a persuasive advocate for those needs both within the team, the wider organisation and across government
- Work alongside User Centred Design (UCD) peers (Head of Design and Head of Content Design) to continuously improve our UCD capabilities
- Help set strategic direction and embed good user research practice across agile digital teams whether they be in Digital Service or other parts of DfTc
- Maintain and grow existing user research community of practice across DfT family to continue building DfT’s collective user research knowledge and capability

**Person specification**:
You will have:

- Proven experience of designing, facilitating, and analysing a wide range of qualitative and quantitative user research methods
- Proven experience of working in an agile development environment alongside designers, developers, and/or product managers to create new digital products and services
- Proven experience of understanding user needs for web content, tools and transactional services, especially those with the most complex user journeys
- Experience leading, developing, and contributing to communities of practice
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Strong leadership and team management abilities

**Additional Information**

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
