**Support Worker Role**
**About the Role**
This is an exciting opportunity to join a care package being put together for a teenage boy with cerebral palsy and complex health and communication issues - in his home and in the community.
He’s a warm and enthusiastic person with a great sense of humour and loves getting out and about for physical activities, hydrotherapy and interacting with people.
Our client shares his pet-free family home with his mum and both older and younger brothers.
The role involves some light domestic duties in support of our client, and the provision of personal care.
You won’t need to use your own car while on shift, but you will need to drive the client’s manual drive vehicle to get our client out and about in the local community and taking part in activities. You’ll assist our client in attending appointments and possibly in time to accompany him on weekends away and/or holidays.
**Job Specifications/Description**
1) To work with our client, a teenage boy who has cerebral palsy, in his home and in the community.
2) To enable him to participate in recreational and leisure activities, both at home and in the community.
3) To support our client by providing nutrition and medication via a PEG feed (training will be provided).
4) To support our client to transfer using equipment and safe techniques as directed by the rehabilitation team (training provided).
5) To support our client with their communication using communication technology and strategies as directed by the rehabilitation team (training provided).
6) To work alongside him and where possible involve him in light household tasks.
7) To carry out light domestic duties in his house as appropriate, such as vacuuming, washing, and ironing.
8) To act as a driver, using his vehicle - mainly locally, and further afield if needed.
9) To provide daytime, evening and overnight support on a rota basis across seven days. In school term time support is provided before and after school.
10) To have availability enough to offer occasional cover for staff holidays and sickness - which may include weekdays.
11) To have availability enough to offer additional cover during school holidays.
12) To aid and support the client as directed by the Case Manager/Team Leader.
13) To follow an agreed approach, and use strategies documented in the support plan, working in collaboration with the client’s family, Case Manager, Team Leader and any other professionals when required.
14) To work alongside a team of rehabilitation professionals to agreed rehabilitation programmes.
15) To undertake training and supervision as agreed by the Case Manager.
16) To ensure client confidentiality in all matters relating to the client.
17) To provide assistance and support as directed by the Case Manager/Team Leader, and to be responsible to the client via the Case Manager/Team Leader.
18) Any other appropriate and reasonable task in relation to the employment as agreed with the client and Case Manager.
19) To provide daily ongoing support/prompts to assist the client to undertake personal care and domestic activities.
20) To accompany the client on holidays and weekends away when required.
**Essential Qualifications/Experience**
- You must have the ability to work on your own unsupervised, or as part of a team.
- You must have a full UK driving licence and be a confident driver.
- You must be prepared to have business class insurance on your own vehicle if you have the use of one for work.
- You must be prepared to provide personal care.
**Desirable experience**
- To have a knowledge or level of understanding around Cerebral Palsy.
- To have experience of working in people’s own homes.
- To have experience of working with clients with complex care needs.
- To have experience of working with clients with complex communication needs.
Skills and Aptitudes
The following skills and aptitudes are when working with our client.
1) You should have a non - judgmental approach with the ability to see things from other peoples’ perspectives and be respectful of their lifestyle choices.
2) A calm communication style with clear pronunciation when speaking.
3) An understanding of the ‘enabling approach’ and the ability to judge when direction needs to be offered to the client.
4) A sense of humour is vital, along with an understanding of appropriate boundaries, with a mature, confident, and professional approach.
5) To be able to integrate an understanding of brain injury - displaying empathy but with a non-patronising approach.
6) The ability to follow the support plan, the Case Manager/Team Leader and guidance, and to accept feedback.
7) To display an understanding that the workplace is also the client’s home.
8) Have flexibility and a willingness to step in and help the client and family when the situation demands it.
9) Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a variety of people involved with the client.
