We are excited to advertise this new role at Gibside, as we bring together a team of gardeners to care for and shape this special place. We are in the early stages of unlocking the amazing potential these gardens can offer to our communities and visitors. You'll be responsible for working with our Head Gardener, Gardener and volunteers to maintain and develop our outside offer, delivering horticultural excellence and engaging visitors with the story of the gardens, inspiring them with an enthusiasm for horticulture and for the work of the National Trust.

**You'll join us on a permanent full time contract.**

What it's like to work here:Gibside contains a blend of formal and informal features, with trained fruit trees, herb and vegetable growing in the Walled Garden, lawns and avenues, topiary and a wide range of ornamental shrubs alongside wildflowers and woodlands rich in nature. The designed landscape is dotted with characterful buildings providing focal points, while straight walks, serpentine paths and curated views over rolling parkland and wooded slopes all make for a dramatic experience.

As Senior Gardener you will be based at Gibside reporting to the portfolio Head Gardener. As one of the senior staff on property you will be part of a duty manager rota that will include some weekend working.

What you'll be doing:We don’t just need you to manage our garden, although this is an important part of the role; we’d like you to help manage the team too. As the Senior Gardener in our team, we’d like you to lead by example, with exceptional gardening skills, but you’ll also understand how to manage the workload for this team, and deliver exceptional training to new staff and volunteers, empowering them to deliver to a high standard in the gardens.

We want you to be part of building a positive and inclusive environment across your team as well as the wider property. You'll ensure everyone feels welcome in the garden and support the interpretation aims of the property in imaginative ways. You'll work closely with the Ranger team that support wider site management at Gibside.

**Manage:
- Team development and support
- Work planning and training for volunteers
- Contribute to Garden Management Plan

**Horticultural skills:
- Wide practical experience
- Good Knowledge of Plants, Plant health and environmental issues
- Appreciate historic gardens

**Knowledge of Operational Risk:

**Understand Visitor Experience:
- Portfolio objectives
- Garden experience for visitors
- Complete people skills

- Delegated Budget Management
- Manage small Projects
- Identify funding

**Who we're looking forTo be successful and shortlisted for an interview ideally you'll be able to display**:

- Management: including supervisory experience, producing work plans, training and working with volunteers. You’ll inspire your team and work closely with colleagues to achieve collective goals
- Practical horticultural experience including broad plant knowledge and awareness of plant health issues. Qualified to RHS Level 3 or equivalent experience. An appreciation of garden heritage would be an advantage
- Understanding of operational risk and experience of relevant health & safety best practice
- Visitor experience - You’re passionate about connecting people and place and appreciate the importance of access, interpretation, presentation, and engagement
- Competent with the use and maintenance of garden machinery including chainsaws, tractors, hedge trimmers, pedestrian and ride on mowers
- Ability to drive tractors and estate vehicles.
