Didcot, United Kingdom Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Full time

**Science and Technology Facilities Council**

**Salary**: £20,650
**Hours**: Full time
**Contract Type**: Fixed Term for 6-12 weeks
**Location**: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire
**Interviews**:The recruitment process involves a technical interview only that will take place virtually in April 2024
**Start**:June/July 2024

The Particle Physics Department (PPD) at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) of Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), is one of the largest Particle Physics groups in the UK

We work with people across the world to understand and discover the fundamental building blocks of the Universe. We design, construct and operate some of the most sensitive scientific instruments in the world, collaborating with partners in academia, industry and international laboratories such as CERN. We currently work with the ATLAS, CMS, LHCb, DUNE, Hyper-K, T2K, MICE, Lux-Zeplin, DEAP-3600, CERN DRDs, Electron Ion Collider and AION collaborations

**Summer Placements at STFC**

STFC’s incredibly diverse range of placements allow you to work alongside world leading engineers, scientists, and technicians in highly collaborative environments. Whichever you choose, you will become a critical member of the team in which you will be exposed to exciting projects and challenges from the start. You will also be supported every step of the way by our dedicated Early Careers Development Team

STFC offers a benefits package crafted to provide an excellent work/life balance including flexible working hours, health promotion programmes, and subsidised restaurant and coffee outlets. For more information on our full list of benefits, please visit here:
**About the role**

This placement is to optimise and benchmark the performance of new ATLAS High Level Trigger software being developed utilizing modern software techniques to fully exploit new computing architectures.

The ATLAS High Level Trigger decides which collision events are to be recorded for analysis offline and which are to be discarded. It does this by reconstructing features characteristic of, for example, electrons, muons, tau-leptons or groups of nearby particle (jets) using software algorithms that run on a farm of computers. The software has to be fast.

Currently the farm can process 100,000 events per second but it will be upgraded to process 1 million events per second for the LHC Phase II upgrade. For this upgrade, the RAL group is developing new tracking software that reconstructs particle trajectories through the Atlas Inner Tracker. We're looking forward to give a placement student the opportunity to participate in the code development and develop analysis tools that they will use to measure the performance of the software.

Overall, activities will include:

- Develop code to measure the performance of new tracking software
- Use these tools to optimize the software for speed and track reconstruction efficiency
- Present weekly to line manager on progress with the project
- Create a report summarising findings of the studies at the end of the project

We plan for this role to be based on site, but with hybrid working patterns also considered.

**Essential criteria**:

- Are in full time education at university, and will be returning to university/your studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement
- Basic knowledge of fundamental particle physics
- Proficiency with Python
- Experience of data visualization tools (for graph plotting etc., e.g. ROOT, matplotlib (S&I)
- Basic knowledge of C++
- An interest in improving software
- Ability to work independently and in a team

**Desirable criteria**:

- Experience with a Linux environment
- An interest in pattern recognition or machine learning

**Important Information**

**About The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)**

As one of Europe’s largest research organisations, we ask the biggest questions in the universe to find answers that change the world around us. We seek understanding. We’re proud of the impact we make. And we’re committed to helping build a globally competitive, knowledge-based UK economy. Being part of all this means contributing to work that pushes boundaries and creates possibilities. You’ll work with, and learn from, true experts.
