We are seeking to recruit a skilled and enthusiastic Deputy to join our Virtual School. This role will have specific responsibility and leadership for the education, employment and training of care-experience young people aged 16-25.

The post holder will fulfil an important role within the Council and as part of Islington Virtual School Team will be responsible for ensuring that the council fulfils its statutory responsibilities to promote the education, employment and training of looked-after children, care leavers and previously looked-after children. As part of the Virtual School Team, the Deputy Head of Virtual School will support and challenge professionals in developing, promoting, and implementing strategies to improve the outcomes of young people who are in the care or previously in care of the Local Authority. The Deputy Head of the Virtual School will be responsible for managing 4 members of the team, including Advisory and Support Teachers and Education, Employment and Training Personal Advisers. The post holder will lead specifically on policy, procedure, and practice in relation to post 16 to 25 education, employment, and training. The Deputy Head of the Virtual School will use a high level of knowledge in relation to all aspects of education, employment, and training, including post 16 education, employment, and training. The post holder will require a knowledge of interventions to promote engagement, attendance and learning. The ability to work creatively and productively with a wide range of professionals and make effective decisions about children and young people’s education, employment and training is essential.

The most recent OFSTED of Islington reported that the Virtual School was well led and knew their well, and over time time children and young people make good progress from their starting points,
1. To take responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young person’s /vulnerable adults.
2. To be an effective Deputy Head in the Islington Virtual School, supporting the Local Authority in their duty to promote the education, employment and training of Islington’s looked-after children, care leavers and previously looked-after children.
3. To deputise for the Virtual School Head as directed.
4. To manage and supervise 4 members of staff within the Virtual School.
5. To be lead and contribute to the strategic planning and delivery of the work of the Virtual School’s at Post 16 -25 level. This includes monitoring and evaluating practice accurately to support improvements.
1. Be responsible for a small pupil caseload and ensuring the education, employment and training outcomes of children and young people. This would include ensuring post 16 looked-after children have an up-to-date Personal Education Plan and taking the lead in making decisions to ensure their education, employment and training needs are met.
2. Effectively monitor and challenge the use of Post 16 Pupil Premium Grant for individual pupils and cohorts of Islington’s looked-after children.
3. Co-ordinate the cross
- team work with council services, partners, local businesses, and providers to ensure that children and young people can access relevant education, employment, and training opportunities.
4. Provide high quality advice and support for Social Workers, Personal Advisers, carers and education, employment, and training providers. Where necessary effectively and appropriately challenge education, employment and training providers and other professionals where there is evidence that children and young people’s needs are not be addressed.
1. Develop effective working relationships with key personnel in Children’s Services, schools and colleges in order support and challenge professionals and overcome situations where children and young people, are not receiving appropriate education, employment, and training for unnecessary periods of time.
2. Analyse qualitative and quantitative information and data on education, employment, and training outcomes to effectively meet the needs and requirements of the service.
3. To lead on the development and creative implementation of specific projects aimed at improving the outcomes young people aged 16 to 25.
4. As part of the Virtual School develop and deliver training to professionals, including carers, teachers, and social services staff to further the understanding of professionals in supporting children and young people’s education, employment, and training.
5. To undertake other duties commensurate to the grade of the post.
