Job description

The RYA is the UK national governing body for all forms of recreational, competitive and professional boating. It represents dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, windsurfing, inland cruising and personal watercraft. It runs the World Class talent plan, involving c.800 sailors from Junior Zone to British Sailing Team level, on behalf of Sport England and UK Sport.

The RYA has several programmes that involve children, young people, and adults at risk. The RYA Sailability programme provides boating opportunities for people with disabilities, of all ages. Apart from the World Class programme and events organised directly by the RYA, most of these activities are delivered by RYA Affiliated Clubs and Recognised Training Centres.

As a recipient of Sport England funding to support its participation development and junior performance programmes, the RYA has achieved the Standards for Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport set by the NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) and the Safeguarding Adults standards set by the Ann Craft Trust (ACT). RYA is required to report annually to the CPSU and ACT which monitors maintenance of the Standards on behalf of Sport England.

The RYA strives to go beyond minimum compliance to ensure that sailing and boating is Safe and Fun for all that participate using influence and accountability both externally and internally.

The Safeguarding and Equality Manager has a UK-wide remit and is supported by a safeguarding lead from each of the home countries. Each home country association is accountable to their own Sports Councils for safeguarding children, young people and adults at risk in their clubs and programmes. However, the RYA HQ Safeguarding Team lead on the development of guidance, policy, training, support and management of safeguarding referrals.

**Requirements of the Role**
- Chairing the quarterly meetings of the Safeguarding Steering Group, which also involves consultation on the agenda and associated items of business as necessary with the Safeguarding and Equality Manager.
- Holding monthly discussions with the Safeguarding and Equality Manager and or the Safeguarding Officer in a supervision capacity regarding on-going business and items of concern
- Contributing to discussions relating to Safeguarding matters of concern on a needs-led basis.
- Playing an active role in the business of Case Management and engaging in case management meetings on a needs-led basis.
- Supporting the preparation and delivery of Safeguarding items that associate with assessment and review by external bodies, with specific reference to the annual assessment by the Child Protection in Sport Unit and the Ann Craft Trust.
- Producing and presenting the Annual Report to the RYA Board.
- Engaging in the selection process and acting as a source of mentorship, as relevant in the event of any recruitment to the post of Safeguarding Lead(s) during the term in office.

**Time Commitment**

The term of office for the Independent Safeguarding Advisor is four years.

The post holder will be required to:

- Chair four Safeguarding Steering Group meetings per year (average meeting time 2 hours) plus additional time before and after the meeting to review to review papers
- Engage in monthly meetings with the Safeguarding and Equality Manager / Safeguarding Officer / Director of External Affairs (1.5-hour average)
- Engage in Case Management Meetings as necessary (1 hour)
- Give sufficient time to undertake the other key responsibilities of the role

**Expenses and Renumeration**

All reasonable travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed following agreement with the Director of External Affairs.

The successful applicant will be asked to become an RYA Member. The cost of this membership will be reimbursed as a volunteer expense.
