**Job summary**:
**Overall purpose**:
Disparities in award rates and underrepresentation of researchers from Black, Asian, Mixed and minority ethnic backgrounds in the biomedical sciences, in our staff population, grant portfolio, and boards and panels, are some of the Medical Research Council’s (MRC) major EDI challenges. You will kick start an in-depth examination of these issues and contribute towards focused efforts to progress and ensure race equality for grant applicants, staff and the wider biomedical research and innovation community.

You will take a lead role in coordinating the development and implementation of race equality activities within the LMB and MRC, including building awareness of key issues, engagement with staff and wider biomedical research communities, development of actions in collaboration with key stakeholders, and undertaking effective data analysis to support data driven race equality strategies.

Furthermore, you will support the delivery of the MRC’s overall EDI priorities and work with colleagues within the EDI teams in MRC centres, institutes and units to ensure there is a joined up and intersectional approach across all our EDI work, to help achieve the People and Culture Strategy ambitions to create “a more inclusive, dynamic, productive and sustainable UK Research and Development sector in which a diversity of people and ideas can thrive.”

It is anticipated that key outputs will include completing an extensive race equality analysis report focusing on the MRC and biomedical research and innovation sector, including the identification of specific actions arising from consultation and data analysis, and project managing the effective delivery and implementation of actions associated with the ‘Black in Biomedical Research’ project.

**Job description**:
**Main duties/ Key responsibilities**:

- 1. This includes:
- Working in partnership with other EDI leads, wherever possible, to identify race equality actions which could benefit other diversity strands and seek to build intersectional initiatives and interventions to enable joined-up working.
- Building effective partnerships across UKRI Councils and MRC centres, institutes, and units, including for example the Race Inclusion Striving for Equity Network, to facilitate a collaborative and partnership approach to race equality.
- Engaging with external regional and national networks to keep informed about good practice and developments across the biomedical research and innovation sector.
- 2. Implement the ‘Black in Biomedical Research’ project actions working in partnership with EDI teams in the LMB and MRC and other key stakeholders. This includes:
- Ensuring the effective running and coordination of the new Black in Biomedical Research Advisory Group, such as organising meetings and providing administrative support (for example preparing minutes, tracking actions, and supporting the good governance of documents etc.).
- Coordinating the development of new internship and fellowship opportunities for Black students and researchers etc.

3. Develop and deliver high quality communications, briefings, awareness-raising sessions and events (e.g. anti-racism and Black History Month) to support race equality in the MRC and LMB, and wider EDI priorities.

4. Collect and analyse both quantitative and qualitative race equality data to support an evidence-based approach to tackling barriers and identifying race equality actions.

6. Undertake other duties as determined by the LMB EDI Manager and MRC EDI Engagement and Change Manager and those commensurate with your grade, and/or hours of work, as may reasonably be required.
