An opportunity has arisen for the role of a Parliamentary Communications Officer to join the staff team of Owen Thompson MP for Midlothian.

**Job Title**: Communications Officer

**Location**: Midlothian based with occasional hybrid working and travel to Westminster.

**Salary**:£22,605 - £36,744 dependent on relevant skills and experience.

**Hours**:This position is full time fixed term of 6 months, with scope for extension following a General Election.

**Key responsibilities**:

- Produce press releases, liaise with the media, meeting deadlines as appropriate.
- Monitor media coverage, creating proactive and re-active communications with all media outlets.
- Design and develop engaging, targeted content and messages across a range of channels.
- Manage the MP’s website contents, ensuring media presence is meeting the demands of the constituents, the locality, and the MP.
- Research local, regional, or national issues to support MP’s work, including preparing media briefings, supporting the MP’s office and objectives through highly effective communication.
- Monitor and update the MP’s social media and online presence in the constituency.
- Produce online graphics and video content, as well as publicising surgeries and news alerts.
- Undertake supervisory responsibility as required.
- Retain records and information confidentially and in line with the Data Protection Act

**Key requirements**:

- Applicants must be able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate persuasively.
- Attention to detail, including proofreading skills and accuracy.
- Proficiency in media engagement, professional social media, and website management.
- Experience of campaign planning with a sound background in research.
- Strong IT skills, especially Microsoft packages.

- Ability to work effectively under pressure, respond quickly to developing events, produce accurate information, and draft press lines within tight time scales.
- Ability to plan and organise your time and resources effectively.
- Sound political judgement and the ability to identify appropriate issues and lines for media coverage.
- Experience of promoting news stories and setting the media agenda.
- Experience of developing and communicating consistent messages across a range of formats.
- Must be able to work well within a small team and independently, and to respond flexibly and creatively to a range of requests.
- Willingness to work flexible hours in line with the parliamentary timetable - some weekend and evening work may be required.

There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of normal working hours, including assisting with events with the MP as requested.
