Senior Haemostasis Clinical Fellow

Headington, United Kingdom Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

A full time Clinical Fellow in Haemostasis and Thrombosis is available now at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust based at the Oxford Haemophilia & Thrombosis Centre, Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital, Oxford. The post is available for 12 months in the first instance. The Oxford Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre is the oldest and one of the largest haemophilia centres in the UK and we provide comprehensive haemophilia care to a large number of patients. We also run an award winning DVT diagnostic service within our department and our clinical teams are enthusiastic and innovative in their approach.

The post-holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of patients with inherited bleeding disorders and thrombotic disorders within the Oxford Haemophilia & Thrombosis Centre, as well as within the wider hospital. There will be an opportunity to develop research projects in clinical trials and translational science, although training will focus on the clinical management of haemostasis and thrombotic conditions.

The daily work of the department involves the routine clinical review and management of acute problems in adults with congenital bleeding disorders. The department is also responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) referred by local general practitioners as well as supervision of the anticoagulation of patients within the county.

The Oxford Haemophilia & Thrombosis Centre (OHTC) is one of the largest haemophilia comprehensive care centres in the country. The daily work of the department involves the routine clinical review and management of acute problems in adults with inherited bleeding disorders. The catchment area encompasses much of central southern England. There are no beds within the centre, which is a purely outpatient facility. Patients who require inpatient treatment are admitted to the haematology ward or the most appropriate ward or department within the Trust’s various sites. The department has its own specialist haemostasis laboratory. The department is also responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) referred by local general practitioners as well as supervision of the anticoagulation of patients within the county. OHTC also offers clinical review for all patients at 3 months after a newly diagnosed thrombosis (DVT and PE) to decide on long-term anticoagulation therapy.

The post holder will be part of the team with clinical responsibility for the in-patient and out-patient care of inherited bleeding and thrombosis disorder patients. This will involve conducting out-patient clinics every week and reviewing OHTC patients on the wards as well as reviewing patient referrals from other specialties. These responsibilities will also involve giving advice over the telephone to GP’s and other hospital doctors. In addition, OHTC run many clinical trials in haemophilia and thrombotic conditions and the post-holder would be expected to help co-ordinate and conduct some of the trial activities during their working week. Under supervision, the post-holder will provide clinical management responsibility for the in-house DVT service.

Within this post is 1 day per week where the post holder can complete a research project. The nature of this project can be individualised to the post-holder and can be discussed during the recruitment process.

The post holder’s duties will be primarily at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital but their presence may from time to time be required in other parts of the Trust.
