The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Newcastle University, School of Computing as a Research Assistant/Associate to work on a cross-disciplinary project which aims to use machine learning techniques for health assessment. You will develop automated systems that can monitor and assess daily activities, sleep, and fatigue in clinical, or free-living environments using ubiquitous, wearable sensing (e.g., accelerometer, ECG, etc.) and machine, deep learning techniques. This project is led by Dr.Yu Guan (School of Computing, Newcastle University), Dr. Mark Baker (Institute of Neuroscience, Newcastle University), and Prof. Wan-Fai Ng (Translational and Clinical Research Institute, Newcastle University). The post is based in Open Lab, School of Computing, Newcastle University.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who has demonstrable communication skills, who is a consummate team-player and has previous exposure and thus the ability to produce high quality outputs under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI).

This position is available on a full time, fixed term basis, to start immediately and is tenable for 24 months from start date (with possibility of extension).

Key Accountabilities
- Leading machine learning research activities for this joint research activity. Publishing high quality papers in leading venues
- Playing a leading role in dissemination of machine learning for health assessment in clinical/free-living environments
- Contributing to system development for building an effective framework for automated assessment
- Contributing to the supervision and undertaking day-to-day management of postgraduate students at School of Computing at Newcastle University

The Person (Essential)
- Previous experience in wearable computing and health assessment
- Expert in applied machine learning in the health domain (indicated through first-authored publications in leading venues such as AAAI/IJCAI/KDD/ICDM/IMWUT)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- International outstanding research and/or practice outputs in two or more of the following areas: applied machine learning, deep learning, time series analysis, ubiquitous computing, wearable computing
- Strong machine learning knowledge including deep learning and pytorch and tensorflow
- Strong software development skills (programming language: python/R/Matlab)
- Very strong project management skills indicated via github projects
- Significant experience of project management and team leadership
- Capability of conducting cross-disciplinary research
- Excellent written and oral communication skills

- PhD or close to completion in data science or applied machine learning
