Salary:
Research Assistant starting from £29,619 to £31,411 per annum
Research Associate starting from £32,348 to £34,308 per annum

Closing Date: 10 March 2023

The Role


Working alongside Prof Clare Bambra and Dr Courtney McNamara, you will design and conduct quantitative studies of health inequalities - using UK and international survey data, routinely collected data, mortality and morbidity data.


You will be expected to manage large secondary datasets; undertake advanced quantitative analysis; meet project milestones; prepare papers and reports for publication; and disseminate findings to academics, policymakers and the public.

This is a full-time fixed term post available for 30 months.

Key Accountabilities
Conduct work related to the design, management and analysis of advanced quantitative social science and/or econometric and/or epidemiological studies related to health inequalities
Carry out research within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and to an appropriate standard
Prepare papers for publication, and disseminate findings at academic, policy and public conferences/events as required
Manage large datasets
Work with local, national and international research and policy partners
Ensure that research activity and data is consistent with current research governance instructions and Data Protection legislation; ensure that research activity and data management meet the demands of new instructions and legislation as these come into effect and keep appropriate records
Attend meetings and other events appropriate to the projects
Identify and undertake a programme of professional development, including further training in research methods and other transferable skills.
Carry out administrative and teaching tasks and other duties to support the institute as required by line manager

The Person - Research Associate

Knowledge, Skills and Experience (Essential)
Experience of conducting advanced quantitative analysis using quantitative social sciences and/or econometric and/or epidemiological techniques
Evidence of carrying out research within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and producing research to an appropriate standard
Ability to work independently and as part of the research project team
Evidence of potential to write for high quality peer reviewed publications and present findings at conferences
Evidence of skills in empirical research involving secondary data and using quantitative social science and/or econometric and/or epidemiological techniques
Evidence of skills in using relevant statistical modelling packages (such as SPSS and/or STATA and/or R) and the ability to undertake advanced modelling of health inequalities data
Experience of conducting research in the area of health inequalities and/or public health and/or social determinants of health

Knowledge, Skills and Experience (Desirable)
Interest in the teaching of health inequalities
Experience of research on methodological aspects of quantitative research
Experience of preparing research proposals and securing grant income
