**Description of Service**

Age UK Birmingham & Sandwell is a dynamic and expanding charity that provides a range of services and programmes for people aged 50 and over. Our Memory Care Service support those living with dementia, their families, and carers. Providing support, stimulation, social engagement, and respite for carers.

**Job Purpose**

To drive the minibus to transport clients safely from their homes to the centres and back.

To deliver a high standard of personalised care and support for those living with dementia within a day centre setting. To contribute to the coordination and provision of meaningful, cognitive activities according to clients’ needs and preferences. To help provide a comfortable, safe and active environment for clients and to be independent whilst recognising and respecting their dignity and choice.

**Principal Duties**:

- Drive the minibus, transporting clients, working flexible to cover morning and afternoon drop off duties
- Ensure that passengers are sitting comfortably and have their seat belts on throughout the journey
- Ensure that mini-bus attendance and mileage records are completed at the end of journey and passed to appropriate staff.
- Ensure that all pre-journey checks are undertaken and recorded before driving
- Maintain vehicle logs and report accidents or defects verbally and in writing
- Cover for colleagues during leave and sickness
- Undertake MIDAS and any other training as deemed necessary
- To support volunteers assisting the service
- To undertake any other duties commensurate to the post not specifically mentioned in this job description.
- To support clients to achieve individual outcomes in accordance with support plans
- To assist clients with any personal care needs when necessary
- To support clients during mealtimes, including serving meals and feeding assistance
- To contribute to activity schedule planning and prepare materials for the sessions
- To lead cognitive activity sessions for clients to participate and engage throughout the day
- To encourage clients to take part in cognitive activities based on principles of person-centred care
- To maintain accurate and confidential records for all clients
- To use the appropriate equipment including hoists as provided and use in accordance with instructions
- To report any safeguarding/incidents/accidents to line manager

**Experience and Knowledge**:

- Experience of engaging with older people, particularly those with dementia
- Experience of working within a care environment with a minimum of NVQ 2 in health and social care
- Full driving licence with at least 2 years’ experience
- Show an ability to act on own initiative according to the clients’ individual needs and requirements
- Understanding of Health and Safety as it applies to support work including Risk Assessment.
- A good knowledge and understanding of safeguarding practices

**Personal Skills and Attributes**:

- Excellent organisational and time management skills
- Excellent communication skills, being able to speak to older people from a wide variety of backgrounds and put them at ease.
- Approachable, patient, empathetic, friendly, and able to get on with others and be a strong team player
- Capable of hands-on problem solving and ability to generate ideas and solutions
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, with people at all levels
- Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills

**Other Requirements**:

- Flexible and willing to work some unsocial hours if needed
- Willingness to travel across areas of delivery
- Commitment to incorporating Equal Opportunities principles into all aspects of work.
- Enhanced DBS check
- Driving licence with a minimum of 2 years

**Education and Qualifications**:

- Good standard of education including English and Maths
- Minimum NVQ 2 in health and social care
- Evidence of training appropriate to the post
