- The National Audit Office (NAO) supports parliament to hold government to account and to improve public services. We focus on driving long-term sustainable improvement in public service delivery and work with government and our stakeholders to deliver better performance. In a nutshell, we help the nation spend wisely.
- The Design and Publishing team provides a range of creative, design, production, and publishing services to ensure that the NAO’s publications, events, and other public and internal-facing activities have maximum impact and are of the highest creative and editorial quality; being highly relevant and engaging for our diverse audiences. The team consists of 11 staff, working closely together to deliver a high-quality and professional service.
- We are now seeking an experienced Creative Artworker and Typesetter (CA&T) with graphic design experience to support with both daily graphic design tasks for both print and digital outputs, as well as the standard art working and typesetting of our reports and other publications. Our CA&T’s are responsible for elements of the layout, design, and production of the NAO’s range of publications as well as creating simple-medium social media assets.
- This is a role with broad-ranging creative and editorial responsibilities in a dynamic team that offers career progression. The role sits equally between our Design team and the Publishing team (D&P), supporting each side by varying levels as workload demand shifts between each team. At times this role will be required to support with the creation of video and animation assets, so experience in this area would be beneficial, although not an essential requirement.**Responsibilities**
- Create medium to complex charts, diagrams, and infographics from templated as well as non-templated content. Utilise automation and design tools to design, generate, re-key, and improve where needed.
- Typeset text into pre-existing InDesign templates, ensuring that content is flowed and paginated correctly. Ensure that graphics and charts are in context with the text around them.
- Create basic-intermediate assets for social media.
- Occasionally create collateral for internal use as well as conference material.
- Ensure all work aligns visually with the templates provided and the NAO brand. Contribute to brand evolution conversations from time to time.
- Place publications and accounts into the Houses of Parliament using the semi-automated systems that are in place. Occasionally typeset these accounts and papers.
- Make corrections in publications after client reviews; updating text, charts, tables, and graphics.
- Quality check ‘laid’ publications including artwork and text (as part of a peer-review process).
- Support the Integrated Design Lead and Senior Integrated Designer in quality assuring ‘non-laid’ publications and associated assets when required. Check for style and format and make any amendments where necessary using Adobe InDesign or illustrator and / or brief back to the Designers to make necessary amendments.
- Create finished and accessible ePub and pdf files for print and digital publication. Upload these files to Amazon and communicate with our Digital team to enable uploading to the NAO website.
- Produce work to a high standard and quality, within agreed timescales and quality check own as well as others work to ensure accuracy.
- Communicate job progress at every stage of the process using the approved communication channels and tools to ensure the smooth running of work and schedules.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues in D&P and the wider Communications team, such as the Digital team and Press Office.
- Develop own design, publishing, and production skills and proactively share knowledge and expertise with colleagues in D&P and Communications.
- Contribute to conversations on developments in how D&P innovate our design, publishing and production offering, the service we offer our clients, and the way we operate as a team.

**Skills required**
- ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED
- Intermediate knowledge of Adobe CC; specifically, Adobe InDesign; Illustrator; and Acrobat
- Experience in laying out publications across spreads, creating graphics, and paginating content so that it is fit-for-purpose and adheres to brand and editorial style guidelines.
- Intermediate knowledge of Adobe Photoshop
- Sound experience in quality assurance work
- Excellent spelling and grammar skills and an ability to maintain high accuracy
