Consultant Lead for The Thames Valley Psychology

Oxford, United Kingdom Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

This is a new post (0.4wte), supported by NHS England, and designed to increase the neonatal workforce and improve outcomes for babies, families and neonatal staff. Its creation follows on from the Ockenden report, and Neonatal Critical Care Review (Dec 2019) which highlighted, amongst other things, the need to prioritise the mental health and wellbeing of women, their partners and families within maternity and neonatal care. The purpose of this new post is to support the psychology services based in each of the 5 units in delivering the NCCR recommendations, and meeting the targets established mire locally within the neonatal network.

The Children’s Psychological Medicine department consists of 21 Clinical Psychologists, 2 Child Psychiatrists, a Family Therapist as well as Trainees and Assistants. We are a friendly and supportive team with good arrangements for supervision and further learning. The team draws from a range of theoretical frameworks to inform its practice, including attachment, systemic ideas, ACT, CFT, CBT and EMDR. The team provides a strong and supportive base from which we can give our best to the babies, children and families we meet, as well as to our multidisciplinary colleagues. As a team we place a strong emphasis on self-care and on supporting one another. This means that there are clear job plans and people are encouraged to maintain a good work/life balance.

The Thames Valley and Wessex Neonatal ODN covers 14 hospital neonatal services within our region and includes parent representatives and voluntary organisations working with commissioners for local maternity care and NHS England Specialised Commissioning for neonatal care. It is an exciting time to join the neonatal network, as psychology services (alongside allied health professionals) are growing, so there is scope to shape and input into this process. There are lots of opportunities for peer supervision and CPD within the network, and more nationally with the special interests group of innovative and enthusiastic clinical psychologists working into neonatal care.

The post-holder will collaborate closely with the Wessex Hub Lead Psychologist and Thames Valley & Wessex Network Psychology Lead already in post alongside the growing multi-disciplinary team within the neonatal units. See job description for more detail

Given the large psychology team, medical and allied healthcare colleagues are very familiar with the contribution clinical psychologists make and our input is highly valued in the hospitals. There is lots of supervision and informal support within the Children’s Psychological Medicine team within the hospital, as well as from the neonatal network. supervision
