Airfield Wildlife Control Operator
Are you extremely flexible and financially secure and are you looking for some part time ad-hoc work? Do you love the outdoors? Are you passionate about aviation and/ or wildlife? Do you like to work autonomously? If so, look no further, as we are looking for a full-time Airfield Wildlife Control Operator (AWCO) to work at our **RAF Leuchars** base on an annualised hours contract. If you are flexible, have a full driving license and shooting experience and are not afraid of lone working and shifts, this may be the role for you. If you like aircraft, even better
Wildlife, particularly birds, pose a high risk to air safety, especially during critical points of flight, take-off and landing. The purpose of the AWCO is to eliminate the presence of birds and other wildlife on the airfield, reducing the risk to all aircraft using the airfield.
Wildlife is naturally attracted to the airfield due to several factors, the primary being the abundance of food. Equipped with a 4x4 vehicle, bioacoustics, pyrotechnics and (when all else fails) a shotgun, you will deter the wildlife from settling on the airfield and encourage all bird populations to stay well clear. The entire operation is carried out within the strict guidelines of Natural England, the police and local airfield management. All movements and activities are recorded in a watch log, with all lethally controlled animals dispatched under license as a last resort to preserve the safety of our aircraft.
**Job Type**: Annualised hours - 780 hours annually - to cover sickness and holiday, so we would pass you a rota a month in advance for the majority of your shifts that can be pre-planned, but there may also be some ad-hoc, emergency cover required too. Hours per week/ month will vary considerably, as this will be dependent on what cover is required and you will be paid as you go, monthly, for hours you work in that month so pay will also very considerably from month to month. This is why this might suit someone who is retired and financially secure, who is looking for a part time role, or someone who has another source of income that can be totally flexible around the needs of this position.
**Salary**: £10.90 per hour
**Shifts**: Normal hours of operation are 08:00-17:00 and this is a 7 day a week airfield so some weekend working will be required. Occasionally you may be asked to cover Military Operations on the airfield and this may involve some extended hours, but you will be advised of this in advance and obviously be paid for these hours.
**What we are looking for**:
- Live within a maximum of 45 minutes’ drive from RAF Leuchars (essential)
- Be happy to work autonomously for long periods of time with nothing but your vehicle and your hand-held radio for company
- Be fine to use technology - a tablet in order to record findings and Wats App to communicate with your team members - or a willingness to learn
- Be OK with working outside in all weathers
- Have an ability to think on your feet and cope with pressure as it arises
Shooting experience would be an advantage, but all training will be provided. You will need to be comfortable with the possibility of dispatching wildlife as last resort however
If you hold a shotgun and/ or firearms certificates that would be a huge advantage, but we will assist you to obtain these if you are successful - you must however be able to obtain and maintain such certificates.
This role would suit someone who is fairly active outside of work, likes their own company, is flexible and supportive with a team ethos and who has recent shooting experience (from game keeping, pest control, clay / pigeon shooting, military service etc.).
If you are a keen photographer, this is also an advantage as it could be useful in documentation.
If this all sounds interesting. please do get in touch and let’s see if this uniquely interesting role is right for you
**Job Types**: Part-time, Permanent
**Salary**: £10.90 per hour
Application question(s):
- Do you live within a 45 minute drive of RAF Leuchars?
- What is your current notice period?
- Have you ever had any issues with colour blindness before?
- Are you happy with the hourly rate, shift patterns and the flexible working schedule mentioned in the advert?
- Do you see any reason why you would not be able to obtain and maintain security clearance and gun certificates (with out help)?
**Experience**:
- Shooting: 1 year (preferred)
Licence/Certification:
- full manual UK Driving License (required)
- shotgun certificate (preferred)
- firearms (preferred)

- United Kingdom (required)
Work Location: In person
