Overview

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is a leading organization in safeguarding animal health and welfare in Great Britain.

We are seeking an experienced Veterinary Investigation Officer to join our team, working closely with veterinarians, farmers, and other stakeholders to investigate diseases in farm animals and wildlife.

This challenging role will provide the opportunity to work on various projects, including disease surveillance, diagnostic sampling, and providing advice on disease control and prevention.

About the Role

This Veterinary Investigation Officer position involves conducting post-mortems, collecting data for disease surveillance, and using laboratory testing to diagnose or rule out diseases.

You will also be responsible for collating and reporting findings to clients, farmers, and APHA colleagues, as well as providing advice on disease control and prevention.

In addition to these duties, you will have the opportunity to conduct farm visits to investigate potential new diseases, zoonoses, or threats to the food chain.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct disease investigations in farm animals and wildlife by conducting post-mortems and diagnostic sampling.
  • Obtain relevant history from vets and farmers for investigating disease and to provide data for disease surveillance.
  • Use laboratory testing for diagnosis or to rule out diseases.
  • Collate, report, and discuss findings with veterinary clients, farmers, and APHA colleagues.
  • Provide advice on diseases and make recommendations on disease control and prevention.
  • Conduct farm visits to investigate for possible new diseases, zoonoses, or potential threats to the food chain.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must have a degree in Veterinary Medicine recognized in the UK and registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

You must also have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, either through undergraduate veterinary training in English or achieving the required IELTS scores.
