**Job Purpose**

The Fairness and Equality Team plays a critical role at the centre of the Client, driving forward our strategic priorities through development of evidence-based policies which ensure that tackling inequality and promoting fairness are at the heart of everything we do.

The Fairness and Equality Officer will work across the team providing support for policy, equality, and participation and engagement functions.

The Officer will manage projects and programmes that deliver on our strategic priorities. The postholder will provide project management support to the Client’s Challenging Inequality Programme including ensuring strong governance that helps deliver the programme aims.

The postholder will use their robust understanding of public policy and equalities to facilitate strategic thinking across the Client, identifying emerging policy developments and supporting colleagues to remain alert to long-term risks and opportunities.

The Fairness and Equality Officer will provide expert advice to the organisation on equalities and in particular in relation to Equality Impact Assessments.

The postholder will also be expected to provide advice to council services around consultation and engagement.

This will include ensuring all major council projects and decision are made in consultation with the community and where possible using a co-production approach.

The Client aims to put the community at the heart of all activity creating opportunities to ‘work with’ rather than ‘do to’.

The postholder will contribute to this through promoting participation across council activity.

The Fairness and Equality Officer will be expected to build strong relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders, including elected members, to promote and gain buy in for the Policy and Equality team’s work.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
Project management support to the Challenging Inequality Programme

To take forward projects that for part of the Challenging Inequality Programme

To lead on the development of policy and strategy as well as other high profile cross cutting work

To draft and deliver robust policy and strategy papers, briefings and presentations for a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including senior and elected members, shaped by learning and horizon scanning from elsewhere

Work with relevant colleagues to develop innovative resident engagement initiatives, ensuring residents’ views are reflected in policy-making

To provide expert advice and guidance to services on equalities ensuring Islington is seen as a leader in the equalities space

To ensure services understand the importance of equalities in decision making and complete Equality Impact Assessments

To provide expert advice to services around consultation, engagement and participation ensuring that the Client properly consults and includes residents in decision making

To use data to provide insight into policy development and develop metrics to evaluate performance

To build collaborative relationships with colleagues internally, with senior leaders, elected members and across the Client’s partnerships

To support the development of the Challenging Inequality programme and manage related projects and work streams within this

Perform all duties with due regard to political sensitivity, tact and diplomacy, and maintain confidentiality at all times

Undertake other duties and commensurate to the grade of the post, including supporting the priorities and management of the division as a whole

To use and assist others in the use of information technology systems to carry out duties in the most efficient and effective manager

To achieve agreed service outcomes and outputs, and personal appraisal targets, as agreed by line manager

To undertake training and constructively take part in meetings, supervision, seminars and other events designed to improve communication and assist with effective development of the post and postholder.
