HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales. **The key purpose of the role is to**

Provide assistance for a visually impaired Circuit Judge dealing with Family cases based at Manchester Civil Justice Centre. The key function of the role is to act as a sighted guide for the Judge.
- Assist the Judge in moving around the building, including alerting the Judge to the presence of people in chambers and the courtroom and describe room layouts to provide a perspective of the environment.
- Sit with the Judge while in court using a mirrored laptop to provide information to the Judge when required.
- Attendance and assistance at Judicial College training courses which require overnight stays is required. This can involve travelling to the event the night before. Events are usually held in Northamptonshire and costs will be covered by the business. Approximately 30 days per year. This will be supported by 2 assistants so the day can be split equally.

**Key responsibilities**

**Administration**
- Find documents from the Court File
- Navigate digital databases and portals to provide documents to the judge when required
- Quickly find their way around legal text such as the Family Procedure Rules, Butterworths online, Westlaw and information via the judicial databases available to the judge. Prior knowledge of these is not essential
- Look items up for the judge quickly and find information when the judge is preparing a judgment, for instance at the end of a 5-day family hearing.

**Operations**
- Assist the Judge throughout the working day, including in the retiring room and during hearings in the courtroom
- Support the judge in providing refreshments during the day when required
- Communiate information in a sensitive, tactful and discrete manner by utilising the least instrusive method.
- The need for confidentiality, sensitivity, courtesy and diplomacy is paramount.
- Participate in training as required

**Calculations and analysis**
- Identify and implement solutions to local problems, referring more complex problems to a Cluster Delivery Manager.

**Communicating with the public, juries, the judiciary, other court and tribunal users and representatives of other agencies and organisations**
- Maintain effective working relationships with the judiciary, supporting agencies, voluntary and user groups.
- Behave as an extension of the judge when interacting with other judges and court users.
- Think beyond own area of responsibility, considering wider policy and organisational implications of issues.

**Representation**
- Represent the function you have been assigned to at an operational level

**Specialisms**
- Ability to provide audio description of their observations
- Ability to quickly find their way around legal texts such as Family Procedural Rules, Butterworths online, Westlaw and information via the judicial databases available to the judge.

**Accountability**
- Reporting to a manager within the administration team who will be their line manager.

**Other duties**

The post holder is required to work in a flexible way and undertake any other duties reasonably requested by line management which are commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post.
