Bristol, United Kingdom University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Applications are invited for a unique opportunity to support the delivery of high quality transfer care for critically ill children within the Southwest region using simulation education and training across multiple hospital sites. The Outreach Time Critical Transfer of Children (Outreach TiCToC) course has been designed to promote safe and effective transfers of children with time critical presentations from their local hospitals to tertiary services at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

Take the lead role in planning, organising and delivering the Outreach TiCToC course to the 11 DGHs within the South West region.

Act as an information resource for the multi-professional clinical teams in the DGHs.

Support clinical teams in the DGHs with service improvement plans based on findings / outcomes of individual courses.

Complete a project evaluation report for the SWPCCODN / NHSE for SWP.

Develop the resources required to enable continued delivery of the course after the end of the term of this appointment.

Attend and present project work at national / international conferences.

University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is one of the largest acute Trusts in the country, with a workforce of over 13,000 staff and 100+ different clinical services across 10 sites, serving a population of over 500,000 people across Bristol and Weston. UHBW has been rated by the CQC as ‘Good’ overall and our staff are proud to deliver excellent care to patients. As a forward-thinking multi-award winning Trust, committed to improving patient care, our world-leading research and innovations are having a positive local and global impact.

Join us and you can enjoy city living, be in the countryside or by the seaside, with easy access to all the South West offers. UHBW is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.

It is important that you are aware that you may need to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19, for all patient facing roles and roles within patient facing areas (unless there is a clear medical reason or where there are other exceptional circumstances such as no requirement for occasional patient contact).

UHBW provides tertiary paediatric services for the South West of England with a population of around 1.2 million children, at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) which is also the designated Major Trauma and Burns Centre for the region.

The WATCh service provides a comprehensive paediatric critical care transfer service from District General Hospitals (DGHs) into the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at BRHC. There are however, a number of children each year that require transfer by their local hospital teams rather than waiting for the WATCh team, having been deemed as a time critical transfer, e.g. neurosurgical / intra-abdominal pathology, which require immediate surgical intervention on arrival at BRHC.

Time critical transfers are a relatively rare event for each individual DGH, and will occur with little warning, requiring the creation of an ad hoc transport team. These events can cause considerable stress for the staff involved and add pressure to already busy services. In 2017, a one year pilot project, funded by Health Education England (HEE), saw the development and implementation of the Outreach TiCToC course which, as delivered insitu within the DGH, enabled systems, processes, local resources and personnel to work together with expert simulation Faculty, to establish safe and timely transfer pathways.

UHBW is an international centre of excellence for simulation based medical education and there is a well-established and supported simulation programme running both within the dedicated BMSC as well as in-situ simulation programmes across the Trust. It is anticipated that the post holder will develop strong professional links with the Bristol Paediatric Simulation Programme (BPSP) and will work closely with the BPSP PICU Simulation Fellow.

Applications are welcomed from individuals within Anaesthesia, Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine or General Paediatrics. The simulation component of the role is 0.5 FTE (24 hours per week); it is hoped that any remaining hours (up to a full time equivalent) will be worked within the PICU.
