Newborn Hearing Screener

Manchester, United Kingdom Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust Full time

An opportunity has arisen for a new member of staff to join our friendly Newborn Hearing Screening team in Manchester. We are one of the largest hearing screening programmes in the North West and play a vital role in the early detection of permanent childhood hearing impairments, completing approximately 16,500 newborn hearing screens a year. The role will suit an individual who would like to develop their career in a healthcare position. If you have previous experience of working with the general public, particularly parents and infants, and you are computer confident then this could be the post for you.

The post is 24 hours per week over 4 shifts including weekend and bank holiday working at an enhanced pay rate. You will be based at St Marys Oxford Road Campus but must be able to work flexibly as you may be asked to work at one of the other hospitals, or to support community clinics. A full driving license and access to a car is therefore essential.

In return we will provide a comprehensive induction programme including service specific training in order to complete an external competency assessment. You will be required to undertake a fully funded Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners to become a qualified Newborn Hearing Screener. This is a national qualification which non-professionally regulated staff working in some screening services complete. The Diploma involves a range of written, oral, and practical assessments and must be completed within 12 months of enrolment.
- To identify all the newborn babies requiring screening and ensure the parents of these babies are offered the Newborn Hearing Screen.
- To obtain informed consent as per national and local protocols.
- To carry out hearing screening within the maternity hospitals (including Special Care and Neonatal Intensive Care Units) and outpatient/community clinics as per national and local protocols and procedures.
- To accurately process data on the Smart4Hearing screening database including transfer of in area and out of area records.
- To use EMIS to manage patient activity in community clinics.
- To make referrals to the audiology departments as per local procedure.
- To ensure all equipment is checked, used and maintained correctly as per the equipment protocols and stored securely at all times.
- To comply with Trust Confidentiality procedures at all times.

Whilst COVID-19 vaccination is not currently a condition of employment, we do encourage our staff to get vaccinated. If you are unvaccinated, there is helpful advice and information available by searching on the ‘NHS England’ website where you can also find out more about how to access the vaccination.
