We have developed a fantastic post that
covers Movement Disorders and Frailty that
offers a unique opportunity for higher
specialist trainees in geriatrics to further their
knowledge and experience in these two areas
that frequently present together. It is built to
established teams in both the fields at
Gloucestershire Hospitals and work on
developing pathways for inpatient care of
Patients with PD (PwP) and overall
management of frailty syndromes that
particularly affect PwP. Needs of PwP
especially in the complex phase of PD are
changing and they are staying longer in acute
hospitals. There is an opportunity to blend
skills of interface geriatrics with that of a
movement disorders specialist to influence
decisions to admit, length of stay and the care
offered to those admitted to the acute
hospitals. There is emerging guidance on
management of frailty syndromes e.g. fragility
fractures. This post aims to provide the
necessary skills to trainees in the above areas.

The post is designed for a post MRCP
geriatrics and would be an ideal opportunity
for those who are already in a training
programme.
Clinical sessions would be split between
Movement Disorders (both out patients and
inpatients) and Acute Frailty Services. Time
has been built within the job plan to develop
additional skills with neuroradiology,
neuropsychiatry and advanced therapy in
would be offered clinical and educational
supervision within Care of the elderly
Department as well as Post Graduate Medical
Education Department by our Research Tutor
and Leadership Tutor. The successful
towards publishing their findings at local,
regional and national levels.

Care of the elderly Department is a large and
inclusive department that works not only
across two sites at Cheltenham and Gloucester
but our team also works across 5 community
hospitals, Nursing homes and community
frailty teams. We are represented by 13
substantive consultants, specialty doctors, 2
Advanced Clinical Practitioners, 6 Advanced
Nurse Practitioners, Therapy staff and three
GPs with Special Interest. We work closely
with The Parkinson’s Specialist team which is
largely outpatient based but offers in reach to
ward areas via referrals. There is a strong
ethos of multidisciplinary team working and
learning. Several team members are faculty
members of the Post graduate Medical
Education Department providing a strong
educational component to training that is
offered.
