We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to help develop a prototype UK and pan-European anthropogenic CO2 emissions Monitoring and Verification Support (CO2MVS) system.

**The Opportunity**:
Earth Observations (EO) from space capture immensely valuable measurements of the climate of the UK and worldwide. EO data are complex and transforming these measurements into information usable for world-class science, climate services and enhanced policy making is challenging, scientifically and technically.

The UK Earth Observation Climate Information Service (EOCIS) will address this challenge end-to-end, demonstrating a resilient “UK climate data supply chain” for the first time, built on a strong, continuing heritage of research, data creation and national digital infrastructure. EOCIS builds on UK expertise in key aspects of climate data and their exploitation, ranging from polar ice change to carbon cycling to drought, while maintaining the UK’s world-class expertise in climate data and providing a direct link from scientific skills in transforming EO data to climate services. EOCIS involves 14 partners (including the University of Edinburgh) across the UK.

At the University of Edinburgh, you will lead the GEOS-Chem chemistry transport modelling and the associated data analysis of atmospheric methane, and the development of inversion methods to integrate different EO data. You will develop a robust Bayesian inverse method to integrate short-wave and thermal IR measurements (e.g., GOSAT and IASI) to improve regional emission estimates of methane, with a particular focus over the UK. You will also assess the added value of IASI-TROPOMI methane retrievals to estimate regional emission estimates of methane. As part of this position, you will lead the delivery of results and associated peer-review publications and conference presentations, and liaise with research groups within the EOCIS project.

**Your skills and attributes for success**:

- A PhD (or a PhD close to completion) in a relevant quantitative scientific discipline.
- Experience in developing and running an atmospheric chemistry transport model.
- Experience in data assimilation and/or inverse methods.
- Ability to work independently to break apart a large science question into tractable activities that once addressed can then be pieced together to address the original, larger question.
- Ability to work collaboratively within the group at Edinburgh and more generally with colleagues within the EOCIS project.
