**Job summary**:
The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) are seeking a scientist with experience in wildlife research and particularly in the field of risk assessments and quality assurance. The APHA Wildlife Team is a nationally important centre for wildlife management with multidisciplinary skills in mammal ecology, ornithology, molecular science, epidemiology and statistics. The Wildlife Team provides evidence, impartial advice and services, primarily to Defra, to prevent, mitigate or resolve human-wildlife conflicts.

**Job description**:
This position will add to the department’s role supporting wildlife management and research projects particularly advising on health and safety (e.g. developing risk assessments in conjunction with the departmental safety officer) and ensuring the work is carried out to required quality levels such as ISO9001 requirements (e.g. maintaining training records, advising on protocols ). The post-holder may also be involved in other areas of the team’s work including data inputting, laboratory analyses and scientific literature reviews. This will be in support of a number of different research projects such as humane management of non-native species (e.g. fertility control of grey squirrels)

The post holder will also be responsible for assisting in legislative adherence (in conjunction with our Ethics and Welfare Lead) including working under the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act, attending Animal welfare and Ethical Review Body meetings and assisting in the drafting of licences from Natural England to hold and capture wild mammals and birds under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

There may also be the opportunity for the post-holder to assist in field work and contingency responses.

There will be the opportunity for the post holder to communicate results and develop their knowledge by attending national and occasionally international conferences.

- Responsible for disseminating H&S information relating to policies, lessons learnt and risk alerts
- Advise staff with writing and managing risk assessments.
- Carry out assurance inspections and observations
- Local Quality Manager_
- Representing the department/Unit/Work Group during internal/external audits. Responsible for carrying out and overseeing completion of local ISO9001 audits.
- Responsible for checking non-conforming work reports, scheduling and reviewing effectiveness checks, input onto local register and reviewing for trends.
- Oversee reminders for Equipment maintenance and ensure records are properly maintained, e.g. fit for purpose..
- Responsible for managing Annual Quality Review (management) for ISO standards.
- Contingency for reviewing and maintaining training records and assisting staff with completing training records.

- Assist with Home Office and Natural England legislative requirements
- Assist with data collection and draft reports for customers.
- Assimilation of evidence and information to provide written advice.
- Assist in the laboratory or in field/captive animal work where required.

**Person specification**:
Experience in working across different disciplines in a multi-faceted science team

The role requires extensive experience in building relationships with colleagues as well as having the ability and experience of making difficult and often time sensitive decisions. The holders must have the ability to set priorities and to contribute tactfully to the creation of clear, effective and agreed project plans and risk assessments which meet the requirements of colleagues and project partners/stakeholders.

To make decisions affecting the direction and execution of wildlife research projects in a safe manner. These decisions may affect APHA and Defra reputation, involve personal safety

The following criteria are essential for this role:

- Experience of working to standard protocols in the laboratory and/or the field
- Experience of working with or writing risk assessments
- Knowledge of wildlife research and/or wildlife management
- Experience of literature review
- Good organisational, time management, inter-personal, and communication skills
- A high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office products particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Depending on the areas of work involved you will be expected to have any necessary vaccinations or health surveillance. This will be arranged by the Health Team,
