Trauma-responsive Specialist Children’s Support
6 months ago
The Belay Foundation places Specialist Support Workers in the homes of families whose children have previously been in local authority care. This position is supported by Arc Adoption.
A fantastic opportunity is available to support a 4-year-old boy. This role would be for 5 hours a week, early evenings and weekends, with flexibility.
Kieran* is very sociable, curious and playful; he delights in meeting people and loves to make others laugh. Smart and funny, people often comment on his exceptional manners even if they don’t know the answer to all his many questions. He loves appliances and vehicles, especially exhausts (), and at home looks forward to reading and just exploring in his own time and his own way.
Kieran and his family live with the impact of trauma from his earliest years, affecting his capacity to cope with the daily routines at home and manage his emotions. Fundamentally, the role is to spend time with Kieran, and sometimes his Mum too: build a trusting relationship, play with him at home or take him to the park or on trips out, support him with his learning, and generally help support family life. You will have experience of working with children, with an interest and preferably experience in the developmental impacts of attachment and trauma and potentially in supporting children with other neurodiversities. You will need to be mature, emotionally grounded, patient and reflective, while also being playful, curious, and able to hold strong boundaries while staying connected. You will also need to be physically resilient, happy both to playfully speed after a small boy and also to pick him up to keep him close as needed. Above all, it is crucial you are committed to gradually building a stable, healthy and attuned relationship with Kieran. A car is essential for this role due to the location, and you will need to be comfortable out and about and managing transitions with a four-year-old.
To support you The Belay Foundation will offer training in attachment and trauma, safeguarding, professional boundaries and regulating techniques as well as other any other preparation that will help you in the role. You will also receive ongoing support, peer supervision and clinical supervision. This is a great opportunity to develop your practice supporting children with trauma and to learn about the impact of complex additional needs on a child’s development and family life.
