**Purpose of Post**:
The postholder is responsible for providing specialist, comprehensive advice to the students of the University of Plymouth. As the workload fluctuates across the year, particular challenges are faced in maintaining an appropriate level of organisation and efficiency during busy periods, as well as retaining a clear student focus.

The post holder is expected to be able to respond to requests for information which may be of an unfamiliar nature and require investigation or consultation before an answer can be given. The postholder needs to be aware of the sensitive nature of the advice that may be required and engage appropriately. Much of the information handled by the Advice team is confidential and the postholder needs to recognise and understand the additional responsibilities this brings. The diversity of responsibility and the breadth of knowledge necessary to meet the demands of the role necessitate a quick thinker, who thrives on maintaining high standards. A calm approach whilst working quickly, accurately, and effectively is fundamental to the success of this role.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
All duties and responsibilities are at the direction of the Advice Manager. The post holder is expected to work in accordance with organisational policies and procedures at all times.

**Advice**:

- To deliver a high-quality professional advice service to students of the

University of Plymouth
- To provide independent, confidential, non-judgmental, impartial advice and information on academic, welfare, accommodation, employment, and other matters
- To provide support to students who are in dispute with the University
- To advise and support elected officers and other UPSU staff on matters where the trend in individual casework is indicative of an issue impacting on an increasing number of students
- To assist the Advice Manager to collaboratively work with the University in developing policy and procedures that support students in academic and welfare matters

**Principle Duties and Responsibilities**:

- To provide specialist advice and information directly to students via physical and digital mediums as appropriate on the following matters: Academic,

Accommodation, Finance, Budgeting, and referral service to University ofPlymouth students covering all student welfare issues and other matters
- These may include money advice, housing, employment, consumer issues and academic advice
- Money advice includes student support (fees, loans, grants, Hardship Fund etc), debt advice and welfare benefits (calculating entitlement and income maximisation).
- To advise and inform students of their rights and responsibilities as students at the University
- To support students at meetings, appeals and hearings within the University and interpretation of university rules and regulations
- To undertake casework and referrals, as well as the research necessary for the pursuance of the above.
- To be responsible for keeping-up to date with issues concerning student welfare and providing information on the above issues as needed
- To utilise and maintain systems to record, analyse and report on trends that students face using specialist software programs as required, e.g., Advice Pro
- To be responsible for the management of own casework and ensure that procedures for the confidential recording and reporting of work are followed, as well as working within organisational policies.
- Assist in developing and maintaining awareness of the Advice Service to students and staff by promoting the system via online and in person methods
- To work with the Advice team in contributing to the overall development of the service.

**Other duties**
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships and links with appropriate staff in the University
- to-face appointments when required, providing empowering advice and excellent customer service in line with operational guidance
- Build and maintain information for the advice website further developing the capacity of the advice service
- To contribute to wider improvements for students, including - but not limited to developing proposals for policy change and contributing to consultations
- To prepare and maintain relevant statistical information as required by UPSU and University departments.
- To attend training courses as necessary to fulfil the duties and responsibilities of the post.
- From time to time, to attend meetings and perform other duties at other locations, as appropriate to the post and directed by the Advice Manager.
- To undertake such duties as may be deemed appropriate by the Advice

Manager.
- Plan and deliver workshops - online and in-person - on current/upcoming issues relevant to student
