The University of Northampton are looking for a mental health advisor on a temporary basis to join the existing team.

The primary purpose of this post is to deliver services in support of positive mental health amongst students, through direct work with students, support for other staff and liaison with internal and external agencies.**Duties and responsibilities**
- To ensure provision of information, advice and guidance on psychological health, in the context of learning.
- To offer individual support for students presenting with mental health difficulties: assessing mental health and learning needs, offering self-help strategies and information, assisting with access to DSA funded support where indicated, referring to appropriate agencies, assisting the student in liaising with other staff as necessary.
- To ensure provision occurs at all stages for DSA eligible students (pre-entry, induction, on-programme and onwards progression) utilising all appropriate sources (within the course, cross-university services, external agencies).
- To raise awareness of student mental health issues, developing mental health promotion strategies.
- To provide support and training to staff who are working with students with mental health difficulties.
- To promote and market the service as required.

To ensure effective service provision, and to support others in service provision, through liaison with:

- Other staff within Student and Academic Services, particularly ASSIST (Additional Student Support & Inclusion Services Team), Counsellors, Residential Life Team and Academic Advice Managers.
- Faculty and other cross-University services
- Statutory services, including G.P. Practices, NStep, Community Mental Health Teams, Urgent Care and Assessment Team. Voluntary agencies, including Lowdown, Northampton Rape Crisis, Sunflower Centre.
- Other education providers as appropriate to deliver such services.**Skills and experience**

Qualifications:

- Degree or equivalent
- Relevant qualification/training in a field such as MH Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
- Hold a relevant professional body membership as required by the Department for Education. Please refer to Non-Medical Helper (NMH) Band 4 Specialist Mentor (mental health) requirements : nmh_mandatory_qualifications_and_professional_body_membership_requirements.pdf (slc.co.uk)

Appropriate work experience with adults with mental health difficulties.

Ability to respond sensitively to needs of students experiencing mental distress

Understanding of issues affecting students experiencing mental health difficulties in HE
