Cs/3287 - Independent Travel Instructor

Plymouth, United Kingdom Plymouth City Council Full time

**Salary**:£27,803 - £30,296

**Posted**:11/12/2023

**Closing date**:12/02/2024

**Closing time**:23:59

An exciting opportunity have arisen in the SEND School Transport Team to expand our travel training team and to appoint full time, permanent, Independent Travel Instructors to support Students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to become independent travellers on public transport, thereby giving them increased opportunities for future employment and increasing take-up of adult basic skills training.

The aim of the independent travel scheme is to help Plymouth students with special needs to travel on their own to their school or college. It introduces the idea of independent travel and explores the positive effects it can have on their lives. The independent travel Instructors will work closely with schools, colleges and parents in identifying suitable young people who could benefit from the scheme. The students identified will currently be travelling to school or college on taxi and minibus transport provided by the SEND school transport team. Students will:

- learn what independent travel means
- explore how travelling independently can have a positive effect on their lives
- understand the skills needed to travel independently and practise them on public transport
- explore an emergency plan - talk about any worries and take steps to address them

This is an extremely busy service and you will need to be a very well organised person with excellent communication and IT skills with the ability to work effectively in a variety of situations with conflicting priorities.

This role means you will be working with students in the mornings and afternoons helping them to become independent travellers both to and from school/college so flexibility within your working day is essential. This means you may need to work split shifts depending on what time the students are required travel to and from college.

If you enjoy working with young people and have a real desire to make a difference to their lives, this could be the role for you.

Please note this position is not suitable for job share.

Previous applicants need not apply.
