This is a complex, high-profile project and requires an individual who is adaptable, able to prioritise effectively and takes the initiative, while being an effective team player.

**Job description**:
Defra is the UK Government department responsible for safeguarding our natural environment, supporting our world-leading food and farming industry and sustaining a thriving rural economy. We are a ministerial department that is supported by, and works collaboratively with over 30 public bodies. In all we support circa 25,000 staff. Together we are Defra Group.

The Defra Group Reward team is responsible for providing expert pay and reward services across the group. Our main key objective is to ensure that Defra remains compliant with Civil Service pay rules while delivering a reward strategy that aims to modernise our employee offer, and ensure that our people feel recognised and valued for the brilliant work they do.

**The Role**:
As the Reward Specialist you will be responsible for key elements of the work we are doing around capability-based pay for our staff in delegated grades i.e., those below Senior Civil Service grades. This involves working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders across Defra group, advising and resolving on cross cutting issues and supporting the development and implementation of suitable reward mechanisms.

You will need a good knowledge of HR to identify the links into other HR disciplines and have the analytical skills to effectively evaluate information, find suitable solutions and influence stakeholders, who have differing views and priorities. You will have or need to develop an expert understanding of Civil Service pay to ensure the proposed reward recommendations fit within the Civil Service pay framework and organisational systems within which we operate.

You will work independently, under the direction of the Reward Lead, taking accountability for specific areas of project activity. Typically, this involves, but is not limited to the following:

- Working with business leads on the development of local guidance and communications to support the development and implementation of capability-based pay;
- Engaging with HR colleagues and wider, keeping them informed on the progress of the project, securing relevant information, and in the resolution of issues;

- Providing specialist pay advice and guidance to HR colleagues and business leads;
- Running workshops, lessons learned or other such meetings;
- Investigation and resolution of complex pay issues;
- Maintaining the team and project shared documents.

You will also provide support to the wider Reward team, for example helping manage the shared mailbox, taking on reward case work and providing secretariat support to team members where required.

The role offers a great opportunity to be involved in the development of new pay mechanisms for the department and to gain experience in a fast paced, customer facing role, where the priorities change regularly. Defra Group Reward is a great team and you will have the chance to contribute to a key project.

**Person specification**:
To be successful in this role you will have worked in an HR or reward environment.
