The Matron for Neonatal Services will be available to patients, their families and staff to provide assistance, advice and support and to address any problems and concerns as required.

In conjunction with the Lead Nurse and Divisional Nursing Director, the Matron will contribute to the strategic direction of Neonatal Services through meeting key performance and national and local activity targets.

The Matron will work closely with the Lead Nurse, Divisional Nursing Director and Clinical Director to engage with commissioners ensuring that the strategic direction is identified and developed within service specifications and funding streams.

The Matron is accountable jointly with the Clinical Director of the Paediatric and Neonatal Directorate for managing patient flow efficiently and effectively and for all aspects of clinical governance within their remit.
As a member of the senior team within the Division, the Matron for Neonatal Services will act as a professional role model to all nurses and will take corrective action to uphold the standards required of the Trust and the profession.

Responsibility for Patient Care
- Ensure that care is provided on the neonatal unit that is safe; promote and encourage a culture of identifying concerns relating to safeguarding children or vulnerable adults.
- Provide specialist advice, support and leadership to patients and carers in relation to area of expertise. Provide the role of a senior neonatal nurse within the Division and in wider forums
- Act as a role model at all times and contribute to the provision of nursing expertise and specialist knowledge
- Exercise clinical skills/expertise in care of neonates; maintain clinical skills and knowledge and ensure that specialist knowledge is shared amongst nursing staff.
- Ensure safe staffing levels of experienced expert neonatal nurses; ensure sufficient nurses available on rotas to maintain nurse/patient ratio
- Establish and maintain a highly effective communication with patients and carers in order to develop a therapeutic relationship within which sensitive, distressing and complex issues are often addressed
- Promote patient and public experience feedback through local initiatives to drive innovation and change
- Ensure the use of risk assessments and health and safety management, utilising the Trust’s incident reporting system, to improve the quality of patient care
- Encourage and promote an evidence-based culture in staff through the use of clinical guidelines, audit and research

If successful, this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £41.90. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary.

In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £13.
