**Job description**:
The Human Element team is part of the Seafarer Safety & Health Branch which promotes safety and decent living and working conditions for seafarers through legislation and non-regulatory means. Using the principles of human factors and a sound evidence base to promote improvement of seafarer health and safety you will contribute to the MCA's human element (HE) strategy and its promotion in the shipping industry on a national and international platform.
The role of the Human Element Policy Specialist (HEPS) is to help develop and promote continual improvement in maritime safety through regulatory and non-regulatory measures in support of MCA's HE policy and strategy. The principal focus is on improving maritime safety performance by developing human element capability and understanding across the maritime industry.
**Responsibilities**:_
Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:_
- Development of the human element evidence base, identifying and overseeing research on human element issues and reviewing current and future human element developments to inform policy e.g. through horizon scanning.
- Engagement with stakeholders, including providing Secretariat function for, and participating in the Human Element Advisory Group (HEAG) and Human Element Strategy Group (HESG). Support UK human element activity at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other bodies. Participating in collaborative projects e.g. with overseas Administrations, other Government Departments, shipping companies, human element consortia etc.
- Maintain continuous professional development and ensure that professional knowledge is up to date.

**About you**
You have an excellent understanding of and passion for human element science, thinking, and practice and are looking for a role where you can use your expertise, experience and enthusiasm to make a difference.
You have strong analytical and decision-making skills and highly developed drafting skills which would allow you to draft quality submissions and other policy documents.
If successful, you will be expected to develop the necessary human element and maritime industry knowledge.
