**About us**

Alongside these corporate priorities, the Planning Service is involved in the delivery of c.2800 new homes targeted per year, 31 Strategic Sites, an Enterprise Zone, large scale and distinctive employment-generating schemes, and major infrastructure projects underway. Alongside delivering the current Local Plan, the policy team is in the midst of producing a new Local Plan - starting the process of shaping the borough for the next 15 years. The production of the new Local Plan is a corporate priority for the administration, who are focussed on using planning policy innovatively to deliver for Newham residents.

**About the Job**
As development and investment in the London moves steadily eastwards, Newham’s important strategic role continues to grow. The role is based in the Planning Policy Team, working alongside Development Management and the Investment Teams to shape development in the borough to ensure it meets our needs and aspirations.
Planning Policy is entering an exciting phase in Newham: we are undertaking our Regulation 18 consultation on a document which has been informed by the Council’s new corporate priorities, a host of up to date evidence base and the outcome of our extensive Issues and Options consultation. You will be joining the team at a point when strong analytical skills and the ability to negotiate and balance different priorities will be required in order to produce and defend a submission Plan with sound policies which deliver the borough’s needs.
The post requires an appreciation and understanding of planning legislation and national and regional policy; a robust understanding of the importance of stakeholder and public engagement; and the ability to manage a complex and varied array of tasks and responsibilities to drive forward key projects individually and as part of a team.

The post is career graded, with appointment to a particular grade, and progression between grades dependent on experience and performance. Planners are graded SC6 to SO2 whilst Senior Planners are graded PO1 to PO3.
**About You**
You will be will be a knowledgeable planner who has an understanding of planning law, national and regional policy and their implications for plan-making and be familiar with planning in urban environments. You will have political awareness and an understanding of how local planning authorities operate.
You will be self-motivated, enthusiastic and be able to independently and effectively manage a varied workload. You will be able to work well as part of a team and you will be able to communicate complex and technical information accessibly to a range of audiences and build successful professional relationships both within the Council and with external stakeholders.
