This post is an opportunity to work across a wide range of health and research policy issues. The Director of SRE is jointly responsible for the DHSC research and development budget of over £1.3billion in domestic and international health through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). The Private Secretary to the Director will ensure that the Director’s priorities are pursued and work with the SRE Senior Management Team to facilitate the functioning of the Directorate. They will also work closely with the Chief Scientific Adviser’s (CSA) private office so that the Director and CSA remain closely aligned. This will give them a privileged insight into the workings of the UK’s largest health and care research funder and how decisions are made in the Department at a senior level.
- Your normal place of work will be your contractual primary workplace, usually either London or Leeds. Within DHSC we offer non-contractual hybrid working. The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time spent in the office, enabling in person interaction and collaboration and enhancing team working, learning, and support._

**Job description**:
The successful applicant will need excellent organisational skills, the ability to read between the lines, prioritise efficiently and keep track of and monitor progress on a wide range of issues to ensure work is prioritised and deadlines are met. They will also need a flexible approach to managing conflicting priorities and an ability to establish strong relationships with a wide range of people across DHSC, the NIHR and external partners.
This is a fantastic opportunity to help drive forward scientific and health research priorities for DHSC in a very developmental role that is varied, challenging, and frequently fast paced.
**Person specification**:
- Act as a conduit between the Director and the CSA.
- Act as a conduit between the Director and the Directorate, the wider Department, arms-length bodies, and other Government Departments.
- Monitor and track key actions for the Director and senior management team, showing attention to detail to ensure nothing is missed, and prioritise tasks so the most urgent and important issues are addressed.
- Task manage the Director’s diary manager and provide strategic oversight of the diary to ensure the Director’s time is used most effectively/efficiently.
- Ensure that the Director is briefed effectively for meetings through pinpointing relevant officials and commissioning briefing.
- Quality assure material to the Director, highlighting key information, and anticipating/eliciting further information when needed.
- Read and synthesise published opinion, evidence, news, and reports to keep the Director updated on issues relevant to the NIHR.
- Take responsibility for communicating the Director’s views within the Department and across Whitehall.
- Accompany the Director and/or ensure that a relevant official accompanies the Director for visits and meetings when needed, capture the minutes, record, and take forward agreed actions.
- Provide substitute cover as needed in the CSA office.
