Bangor, United Kingdom Bangor University Full time

Applications are invited for the above temporary full time post working in the School of Ocean Sciences.

Duties will include undertaking field and laboratory studies to assess pathogenic microbes in estuarine and coastal environments and developing estuary models to simulate estuary dynamics.

Applications will also be considered to carry out this role on a part-time or job share basis.

Committed To Equal Opportunities

Overview

The School of Ocean Sciences (SOS), located on the Isle of Anglesey, is a multidisciplinary department with a focus on coastal and shelf sea sciences and a strong history of international research excellence and collaboration. Core research interests include oceanography, marine biology and ecology, aquaculture & fisheries, biogeochemistry and climate change science.

The Project

BlueAdapt is a 3-year, 9.8M euro project funded by Horizon and UKRI. It brings together an interdisciplinary team of biologists, climate scientists, economists, epidemiologists and public health experts to investigate and quantify the future health risks associated with selected coastal pathogens. BlueAdapt will provide tools to assess the impacts of policy responses and communicate the results to a wide audience - including both policymakers and the public. A conceptual framework will be developed around existing models of One Health and Ecological Public Health, to help wider engagement with the complex nature of the issue. Horizons scanning and downscaled climate modelling will feed into lab-based experiments and the development of simulations around how changes in climate variables, interacting with other environmental change, may influence the state of selected microbial pathogens of public health concern in coastal waters. Case studies will illustrate how One Health and Ecological Public Health concepts can be used to generate action and identify potential barriers to adaptation. Health impact assessment and cost-benefit analysis will inform appropriate action. BlueAdapt Innovation Slams and policy workshops will help deliver wider impact from the project including new-to-firm and new-to-market products and services.

Purpose of the Job

Coastal modelling will work with existing catchment and coastal models where data are often disjointed and used to predict dispersion rather crudely, potentially generating uncertainties during extreme weather conditions. Improved data and modelling methods are required for estuaries and coasts that respond quickly to river and pathogen loadings and hence are sensitive to anthropogenic and climate shifts. The dispersion of pathogens under these conditions represents a poorly understood combination hazard. The research will focus on contrasting physical estuarine systems: the Conwy (Wales), the Camel (England) and the Arrone (Italy).

The researcher is required to have some pre-existing experience developing and running hydrodynamic models. The applicant can register for a PhD as part of the project.
