Liverpool, United Kingdom Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

The Unit provides surgical services to all patients suffering from renal failure in Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales, including vascular and peritoneal dialysis access, general, endocrine and renal surgical procedures as well as transplantation. Organ transplants constitute 25% of the unit’s theatre activity. The unit undertakes approximately 350-400 vascular access procedures a year and 50 procedures related to peritoneal dialysis.

Around 310 patients are currently awaiting renal transplantation and approximately 120-125 transplants are performed per annum. The unit has a thriving live donor programme that incorporates Total Retroperitoneoscopic Donor Nephrectomy (Pioneers in UK) and an ABO/highly sensitized programme. There is also an active DCD programme. Transplant clinics are run jointly by participating surgeons and physicians and are attended by the nurse clinicians. Patients from North Wales are considered for shared care or transfer to the referring physicians.

There are three recipient coordinators managing the patients on the waiting list, and act as contact points with the regional dialysis network. In-house tissue typing and cross matching are provided by the Department of Immunology on a 24-hour basis. All the surgical staff, in co-operation with the transplant co-coordinators, is expected to take part in the education program necessary to sustain and expand the supply of the organ donors from these hospitals.

The post holder is required to carry out and supervise the surgical treatment of patients suffering chronic and acute renal failure in the Renal Transplant Unit.

The work will be closely supervised by Consultant Transplant Surgeons and Consultant Nephrologists attached to the Unit.

The post holder will be trained in and assist at live donor renal transplants, and will carry out pre and post-transplant surgical procedures necessary for the preparation of patients for transplantation, vascular and peritoneal access procedures. The post holder will also be responsible, with other junior staff, for the day to day care of patients, most of who are on immunosuppressive drugs.

**The post holder is expected to**:

- Attend regular operating lists, out-patient clinics, consultant ward rounds, audit and academic meetings, and case conferences.
- Take part in daily morning ward rounds to be held with all the other junior surgical staff on duty: trainees will attend the daily lunchtime Consultant-led ward rounds.
- Participate in an on-call rota to provide cover for transplant surgical emergencies, in co-operation with other members of the transplant team.
- Specialist Registrars and Clinical Fellows will be responsible for the collation and presentation of departmental audit data at regular audit and Governance meetings, and bi-annually at regional meetings with other centres in the North of England
