Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a healthcare science practitioner to join our team of 27 clinical scientists and practitioners within the radiotherapy department at Nottingham.

The successful applicant would be eligible for registration on RCT as a Clinical Technologist (or currently on an approved training course and expects to gain eligibility for the RCT within 12 months).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will participate in the provision of the technical clinical radiation physics services undertaken by the Radiotherapy Physics section of the Medical Physics Department. This may involve:
The construction of immobilisation, shielding and beam modification devices for patients prescribed radiotherapy treatment

The calibration and dosimetry quality assurance of radiotherapy equipment and treatment plans.

Measurement of patient doses for Total Body Irradiation

The production of radiotherapy treatment plans in conjunction with Physicists, Oncologists and radiographers

Working for our organisation

Radiotherapy in Nottingham is a well-equipped department treating patients in the Nottinghamshire area.

Major equipment includes 6 Elekta Versa HD linacs, 2 Canon Aquilion wide bore CT scanners as well as superficial and brachytherapy treatment facilities.

Treatment planning is carried out with RayStation, OMP and Monaco.

We provide both the SRS and paediatric radiotherapy service for the East Midlands. Other advanced radiotherapy treatments we provide include SABR for both oligo-metastatic cancer as well as primary lung cancer. We also benefit from a well-equipped mould room.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Please refer to the job description and person specification attached to the advert for the full details of the vacancy.

To construct customised immobilisation and shielding devices for patients prescribed external beam radiotherapy treatment. A high standard of accuracy is required as these devices are used to align and set-up radiation beams. The construction techniques require taking direct patient impressions.

To design and construct other immobilisation, shielding and beam modification devices for patient treatments, dosimetry checks, etc.

To measure patient organ doses on treatment when required for Total Body Irradiation.

To assist in the calibration and dosimetry quality assurance of radiotherapy treatment equipment and plans.

To perform IMRT verification as required.

To produce highly complex treatment plans using both IMRT and conformal techniques. This includes image fusion and some contouring.

To perform routine backup and archiving for treatment planning systems.

To assist in the development work in the department including involvement in clinical trials.

To participate in the training of other staff and visitors.
