An exciting new opportunity has arisen within a private country house in Hertfordshire, for an experienced Gardener in search of a rewarding role joining a small team of gardeners on a private house. This role will suit a hands-on gardener with proven responsibility for the maintenance and development of a very special garden to a high standard.

The formal gardens cover approximately 5 acres, within a wider 17 acre setting. The intensely planted 5-acre formal gardens have undergone major improvement works including a new design and improvements to the Rhododendron Garden, the Italian Garden and the Chapel Garden by Randel Sideley.

The Gardener will be a part of the small team of gardeners and must have prior experience in the operation of machines such as lawn mowers and small tractors, as well as having a basic level of horticultural knowledge. The property owners are genuinely enthusiastic and dedicated to their gardens and as such, this role will be varied and interesting with a high standard of horticulture required at all times. The garden is not open to the public. The successful applicant must have relevant experience, expertise, and a strong work ethic. They must be self-motivated with the ability to work alone and manage a team. Extensive use of garden machinery. PA1 & PA6 spraying certificates.

This role would suit someone looking for a long-term position with a passion to create and maintain some very special private grounds. They will be generously supported throughout.

Duties to include:

- Maintenance of plantings, horticultural knowledge is a key requirement; Maintenance of all lawns Maintenance of all hedges Weed control Seasonal bulb planting Maintenance of all drives, paths, terraces and tracks; Maintenance of any garden features, e.g. sculpture, seating; Checking drains;
The maintenance of equipment, keeping machinery in good working condition and
undertaking any minor repairs;
Limited maintenance of external lighting (replacing bulbs);
Reporting to the Head Gardener as instructed.

**Requirements, Qualifications and Skills**

Qualifications:

- Sound knowledge of standard horticultural practices (planting, pruning, fertilising, etc), growth characteristics and identification of a wide variety of plants
- Full clean EU or UK driving licence
- Excellent organisation and team management skills
- Good time management
- Resilience - comfortable working in a fast-paced environment whilst maintaining a positive and flexible attitude
- Physical aptitude to working outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions.
- High levels of ethical conduct: honesty, trustworthiness, integrity
- Tractor driving competency desirable
