The Medical Examiner Service, based at the RUH will comprise of Medical Examiners and Medical Examiner Officers (both clinical and non-clinical administrative support) who will combine clinical skills, compassion and sensitivity and a commitment to engage with bereaved families in order to complete a screen of every in-hospital death and answer the question of “why did the patient die?” and “what can we learn from it?” When screening findings or Trust Policy requires it, the service will identify cases for review using either a Structured Judgement Method or the undertaking of a Root Cause Analysis. These will be performed by clinical colleagues across disciplines/specialties as appropriate.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working as part of a team in delivering an efficient and customer focused service.

The successful applicant will demonstrate compassion and sensitivity and a commitment to engage with bereaved families in order to complete a screen of every in-hospital death and answer the question of “why did the patient die?” and “what can we learn from it?”

They will act as a point of contact for healthcare professionals and the Coroner and Registration Services.

The post holder must have excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills and possess the ability to both listen and question. They will be expected to communicate and form effective working relations with a variety of internal and external professionals.

Support the Medical Examiners in their role in scrutinising the circumstances and causes of deaths.

The post holder will work with Medical Examiners to aid them in their responsibility for overseeing the death certification process for all deceased patients in the organisation and community.
