The Role

You will be located in the Comparative Biology Centre, Newcastle University’s facilities for all research work which involved the use of laboratory animals. Newcastle University has a policy of using animals in research only if there are no realistic alternatives and in projects of major importance. UK standards of care are among the highest in the world, and we strictly enforce them.

You will be passionate about animal care and welfare, have integrity and be honest and trustworthy. You will have a great work ethic and provide excellent technical support and customer service to research groups that utilise the CBC facilities and services. You will play an active and engaging role within the CBC team.

You will be prepared to work with multiple species, across multiple sites and ensure the highest level of animal care and welfare standards are upheld.

The role will include a range of tasks which may involve planning of time and sequence in order to complete a range of activities specified within a timeframe. The role will require an understanding of the work objectives of the professional community so that timing and sequencing of tasks will support the relevant work activity effectively and efficiently.

Key Accountabilities
- General animal husbandry including, cleaning, care, feeding and watering of animals
- Daily checks to ensure animal welfare is to the highest of industry standards
- Liase with research groups and technical team staff regarding breeding, support for procedures and other service requirements
- Provision of excellent customer service for all stakeholders
- Pre and post-operative care of animals under guidance, including appropriate record keeping
- Flexible to work outside of normal core hours when required to cover departmental needs. In addition participation in weekend and holiday rotas
- Read, understand and refer to study plans in order to effectively support related activity. Follow protocols, working practices and risk assessments
- ensuring a safe working environment and high standards of animal welfare are maintained.
- Commitment to assisting with the daily running of the facilities, including general housekeeping, service area, maintenance of store rooms and equipment
- As a team member uphold the security and biosecurity of the department at all times

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Good written, oral and communication skills
- Basic IT skills
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Previous work in animal care environment
- Basic animal handling skills (e.g. handling, cleaning feeding and watering)
- Experience of customer service provision
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment within time constraints and an appreciation of the emotional challenges of working in an research animal environment

Desirable
- Knowledge of abnormal behaviours or sickness in animals

Attributes and Behaviours
- Ability to make decisions about work activity within clear defined and safe guidelines based on University & local policies
- Ability to plan own day, prioritise general tasks and work independently on routine tasks
- Good communication skills both verbally and in writing
- Ability to understand and follow instructions

**Qualifications**:

- Good basic education (O level, GCSE, NVQ2 or equivalent) with good level of numeracy and literacy
- Professional registration with an accredited professional body (including HEA) or working towards this on appointment (Desirable)
