Horizon scanning is about exploring what the future might look like to understand uncertainties better. It's not about making predictions, but systematically investigating evidence about future trends. Horizon scanning helps United Utilities to analyse whetherit is adequately prepared for potential opportunities and threats - this helps ensure that policies are resilient to different future environments.
- **What will you do?**_
- Provide a United Utilities centre of expertise for research that provides strategic insight
- Establish and lead a coordinated approach, including: identifying priorities; scoping and procuring projects to deliver on these priorities in the optimal way; track the benefits; communicating and deploying findings internally and externally.
- Maintain detailed understanding of the many and evolving routes open to UU to undertake research e.g. UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR), academia and consultancy (national and international). Advise others on new research opportunities and the most appropriateroute and funding arrangements for their research needs.
- Lead our two-way relationship with UKWIR to maximise the value of our investment. Make clear UU's priorities and influence UKWIRs focus towards them. Promote UKWIRs outputs and benefits within UU to maximise our use of them. Coordinate UUs voting on UKWIRsproposals and our submission of project proposals. Attend the UKWIR R&D group meetings and support our UKWIR Board member.
- Establish and maintain a repository that makes our strategic insight research readily accessible to colleagues.
- Document and promote case studies of how strategic insight research has delivered value.
- Build relationships with important academic institutions and other research partners such as the Tyndal Centre and WRc (regional, national and international)
- **What do you need?**_
- Experienced and able to commission, marshal and present data and research and other evidence in support of strategic objectives.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence and persuade strategic decisions at a senior level (including board level).
- Ability to work with and influence multiple teams (both direct and indirect).
- Self-driven, confident and able to generate confidence in others, both internally and externally
- Demonstrate excellent planning and organisational skills to facilitate management of own workload, and workload of direct and indirect teams to deliver to internal and external deadlines and quality expectations.
- Ability to maintain their knowledge and skills to be able to develop themselves within their role.
