The Group Head of Media Relations is part of the CEO Office and is responsible for delivering QinetiQ’s external communications strategy which supports the company strategy and communicates the company narrative. The role is critical to the successful management of QinetiQ’s external communications and the individual is also responsible for measuring outcomes across our key markets and identifying areas for improvement.

Working directly to the Group Communications Director and closely with the Group Director Investor Relations, the Group Head of Media Relations is responsible for leading all media communications across the company and primarily in our home markets of UK, US and Australia. The individual will also provide leadership on reputational and crisis communications matters as they arise.

High quality strategic relationships with media stakeholders are built and maintained; opportunities to improve external impact identified and execution plans managed; and, strategic counsel and advice on the use of media channels and engagement with media stakeholders provided to the QinetiQ Leadership Team - working closely with the Internal Communications, Marketing, Strategic Engagement and Investor Relations teams to ensure alignment of QinetiQ marketing with our company goals.

Due to the geographical spread of QinetiQ, this position will involve UK internal travel and international travel as required, specifically to the US and Australia.

Key Accountabilities

In support of the Group Communications Director, develop and manage the Group’s communications strategy to advance QinetiQ’s reputation as a global defence and security leader, specifically ensuring external communications activities are aligned to company strategy and narrative.

Create and deploy a strategic message framework for external communications activities.

Lead proactive media relations for the Group including strategic media engagement and relationship management of top-tier financial, business and trade media.

Manage the Group-level press office function including devising a mechanism for ensuring good coordination of all proactive media relations communications activity.

Oversee Group media events including interviews with senior directors, media conferences and visits.

Develop and manage a senior leadership media engagement plan.

Corporate issues management including the operation of an emergency media response service. Lead on all crisis and reactive media queries, striving for balanced media coverage and protecting QinetiQ’s reputation.

Deliver long term external communications campaigns working closely with the Strategic Engagement, Marketing and Investor Relations teams, to ensure alignment.

In conjunction with the Group Communications Director manage external agencies to deliver in line with the communications strategy.

Work with the Investor Relations team to support investor engagement and maximise opportunities for further external engagement.

Ownership of all relevant Group external communications (including media-related) policies, procedures, instructions and templates to ensure a consistent Group-wide approach and outputs.

Governance of Group external communications related channels to both enhance and protect QinetiQ’s reputation.

Key Capabilities/Knowledge

Demonstrable experience leading and managing the external communications and media engagement within a global organisation

Track record of leading, or taking a significant role in developing, media engagement strategies and plans in support of global and national sector / business priorities

Experience in reputation management and knowledge of how a strategic communications function supports delivery of wider organisational goals

Understanding of QinetiQ’s operating environment in the defence and security sector

Proven experience of senior stakeholder influencing, communication and management

High quality written and verbal communications skills, combined with proven ability to engage with stakeholders at all levels of a publically listed company (plc) and also external media, customers and ministerial offices

Collaborative style, utilising negotiation and coaching skills to resolve issues, influence attitudes and opinions, gaining agreement to plans and ideas

Credibility with top-tier financial business and trade media

Creation of innovative media engagement campaigns

Ability to multitask to prioritise work and deliver to challenging deadlines, with high levels of accuracy and attention to detail

Experience & Qualifications

Strong B2B/B2G, external communications and press office leadership expertise with demonstrable track record of delivering within a publically listed company

Experience working effectively within a Communications leadership team and demonstrating excellent stakeholder management skills - from leadership level through to the wider employee base

Experience of working with high profile customers and key media stak
