**Role**

Working at night and reporting to the Residential Life Team Leader you will work in a support role providing information, advice and guidance to students living in halls of residence. Whilst it is primarily a pastoral post you will also be responsible for managing behavioural issues in halls, in line with university rules and regulations.

This position is for night time cover, the hour are 8pm-6am and the shift patten is on a four on four off basis.

This position is initially until the end of July, although could be extended.

**Duties and responsibilities**
- To provide information, advice and guidance to residential students.
- To effectively support residential students.
- To manage behavioral issues in line with university rules and regulations.
- To monitor safety, security and student behavior within the halls of residence - taking actions as appropriate.
- Work within established processes and procedures.
- Provide a range of support services to an agreed quality standard or specification.
- Respond and resolve enquiries and problems with mínimal supervision, judging when to refer complex queries or involve others to provide an effective service.

- Review service delivery and make suggestions for enhancement and to highlight areas of concern.
- Assist in the planning and organisation of information activities for halls e.g. fire talks; Community Living Agreements etc.
- To monitor safety, security and the behavior of residents; using judgement (and standardised procedures) when to intervene or refer.
- Contribute to the planning of the services provided by the Team/Department.
- Provision of pastoral support to residential students.
- Assist in the interpretation of external guidelines and reviewing/updating/creating procedures as appropriate.
- To promote and market the service as required.
- Actively contribute to effective performance of the team.
- Involve colleagues in discussion and decision making as appropriate.
- Ensure colleagues are kept informed of operational issues as appropriate.
- Deliver, to an acceptable standard, a range of administrative and customer services.
- Manage own personal day to day workload in keeping with service demands, within agreed timescales and as directed by the line manager.
- The post holder will be expected to undertake other responsibilities and tasks as reasonably requested by the Residential Life Team Leader.

**Skills and experience**

Educated to GCSE level Maths & English or equivalent.

A well-developed understanding of student issues.

Display an understanding of potential accommodation issues in halls of residence.

Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse range of clients.

An awareness of issues relating to confidentiality and diversity.

Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Outlook.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Excellent communication skills.

The ability to undertake diagnostic questioning of clients and decide how to inform/advise/guide/ refer as appropriate.

Ability to prepare generic information for clients, in a variety of formats e.g. leaflets, handbook etc.

Ability to undertake verbal communication with clients and colleagues on a one to one and group basis.

Ability to provide empathetic support.

The ability to manage own personal day to day workload in keeping with service demands, within agreed timescales and as directed by the line manager.

Ability to work independently and pro-actively with a minimum of supervision.

Ability to deal with periods of high workloads.

Ability to work effectively on your own in a potentially challenging environment.

Ability to actively participate in teams, working groups and committees.

Excellent attention to detail.

Ability to undertake tours of the halls of residence at night with the potential for lone working.

DESIRABLE:
Have a current knowledge and understanding of residential issues.

A deep understanding of key issues in higher education.

Excellent administrative skills.

Ability to adapt to technological advances in the workplace.

Ability to adapt to organisational change.

Ability to travel effectively between different locations.

**Salary**: £12.00-£13.74 per hour

Expected hours: 36 - 48 per week
