This role requires either a qualification for plastic injection moulding, or evidence of a working knowledge of the plastic injection moulding industry(time served).

Plastic items are not the only thing you will manufacture in this life-changing role.

Leading a team of prisoners working in our Plastic injection moulding workshop you will develop their skills and confidence, and possibly assess accredited vocational qualifications.

We will rely on you and your team to ensure our plastic products are manufactured to the highest standards, but the work you do with prisoners will have the longest lasting impact - and the most unique challenges. You will set tasks to match their ability, while ensuring safety and production is maintained at all times.

Along the way, you could play a part in innovating products for use in a custodial setting or launching a new range for another government department. You will certainty discover potential for rewarding development of your career.

As well as knowledge and skills spanning Plastic injection moulding production techniques, you will need strong communication and influencing skills and a caring, resilient approach.

Our Plastics Industry has 5 workshops with employment places for 84 prisoners. Our workshops are in HMP Garth, Ranby, Ford, Moorland and Gartree. Each of these establishments has injection moulding facilities, operating a total of 27 machines across the workshops ranging from 40 tonnes to 850 tonnes.

**Overview of the job**

This is a non-operational instructional job in an establishment.

**Summary**

The job holder will be responsible for providing supervision, knowledge and skills to prisoners in a specialist workshop so they can improve their employment prospects on release with a view to reducing reoffending. The job holder will ensure that all services are provided to a high standard and that security and control is maintained at all times. The job holder will be able to teach prisoners towards achieving nationally recognised qualifications and may be supported by external organisations such as local colleges.

This job description is not for use by job holders in basic assembly/packing workshops, instead Production Instructor - Enterprises should be used. However, on an exceptional short term basis job holders can supervise prisoners in more basic workshops.

This is a non-operational job in an establishment with no line management responsibilities.

**Responsibilities, Activities and Duties**

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

- You will lead on all aspects of health and safety including completing daily safety checks on the manufacturing plant.
- You will be responsible for ensure tooling is loaded into injection moulding machines in a safe manner, including training prisoners to undertake this task where safe to do so.
- You will ensure that all machines are programmed correctly, which includes where relevant training prisoners to undertake this important task.
- You will lead on the initial correct selection of all relevant ancillary equipment required for each of the scheduled products; for example hot runner unit, materials dryers, water heater and so on. You will the train prisoners to undertake this task under your supervision.
- You will be responsible for ordering and selecting for use the correct material for products scheduled for production.
- You will ensure that at the commencement of production, all relevant worksheets, instructions and quality assurance documents are issued, used and correctly completed.
- You will ensure that products manufactured are high quality and are manufactured under your instruction in accordance with agreed samples.
- You will ensure that all finished products are packed and labelled in accordance with the customer’s specifications.
- You will have the opportunity to assist the central Industries team with the development of new quality products that meet the needs of the customer.
- You will be able to competently undertake any required day to day machinery maintenance and ensure that it is serviced as appropriate.
- You will ensure that all relevant processes and documents are completed with regards to prisoner wellbeing and resettlement needs. Full training and on the job mentoring on what is expected of the jobholder will be provided.
