An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team as a mortuary & bereavement assistant delivering a first class service that is focused on caring for the bereaved across our sites.

You will assist and support the Bereavement Officer in the development and delivery of a sensitive, responsive and high quality bereavement care service, which requires knowledge of a range of bereavement issues, a high level of empathic communication skills and an understanding of different cultural requirements relating to death and bereavement.

The post holder will also work in the mortuary to provide cover to meet the service needs. To accept deceased persons into the mortuary, correctly documenting their arrival. To release deceased persons into the care of the appointed funeral director, ensuring that all documentation involved in the process is accurately completed. The dignity of the deceased must be maintained at all times.

The post holder will work with patients, their families and carers, clinical staff and external professional agencies to ensure that the processes following a death are facilitated smoothly.

The role involves supporting members of the public who may be highly distressed, emotional, angry or vulnerable and therefore experience of working in a similar role would be an advantage. You will be providing help, support and advice through daily contact with bereaved relatives, either face-to-face or over the telephone, demonstrating empathy and re-assurance skills, providing advice on a wide range of relevant topics and information about death registration and answering queries in a clear and sensitive manner.

Being an excellent team player is essential for this role along as you will be working closely alongside the Medical Examiner’s Service and other healthcare professionals.

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

**Main Duties**:
Ensure that all Medical Certificates of Cause of Death and Cremation Forms are completed accurately, appropriately and in a timely manner in accordance with Trust Policy. Where there are concerns about the validity of certificates, or where concerns are raised by the patient’s family, that these are raised with the Medical Examiner team and/or the Coroner’s Office

Recording and maintaining of written documentation and the Register of Deaths data base as appropriate to the role.

Liaising with the Coroner’s Office for those deaths which under current statute must be reported to the Coroner. To be responsible for the checking the accurate completion and faxing of all paperwork required by the Coroner i.e. medical & death reports to the Coroner

Liaising with the Registrar for Births & Deaths to arrange appointments for relatives to attend the Registrar’s Office.

In the absence of the bereavement officer arrange with wards, the emergency department, police, the coroner’s office, mortuary technicians and next of kin (where applicable) the supported viewing of the deceased during normal working hours at the Bereavement Suite. Ensuring that the relatives’ rooms are ready to receive relatives for visits. To check the ID and presentation of deceased patients prior to the viewing taking place, accompanying the visitors and supporting them throughout the process.

Provide information to family and visitors regarding the process of visiting the deceased in the Bereavement Suite, and the arrangements following death.

Ensure all cash, valuables and clothing have been transferred from the General Office to the Bereavement Office daily by working closely with General Office and that relatives are aware of the procedures for the collection of the property.

The completion and faxing of the notification of death to the patients GP.

Ensuring the return of the case notes, by use of the Patients Information System, to the appropriate department - Medical Records, AED or Mortality Peer Review Group.

Ensure documentation is ready for the removal of the deceased to the appropriate facility.

Arrange hospital funerals liaising with the appropriate authorities as necessary.
